That's what I should do -- stop by B&H and actually put my hands on a Z9. I've played around with the Z7 (the first incarnation of it) at the photo show in NYC about three years ago when they first came out. I only live 1 3/4 hrs. from the city and used to go there two or three times a year before Covid. I may try to head over sometime this summer.

I would almost always go for better lenses over a better body. Also, in my experience (albeit wit Sony not Nikon) nothing performs like native glass no matter how well the adapter is said to work.

Here's what Ken Rockwell has to say:

Easy and timeless answer: always put your money into your lenses.

I feel exactly the same ... If you need features, thats diff. Glass always rules.

What did the gorgeous pair have to say about the cameras?

I have canon and Olympus, BUT if I had the cash and still stay FF there is no question it would be a top shelf Sony and the best Zeiss lens I could afford... NOTHING like the look of Zeiss; no I can't describe it, just look at the images...

Perhaps so for sooc but its poor ettiquette and horribly inconsiderate to display sooc. Where are you manners, Sir ?!?!?!

Beats me ... It has no special insignia. Its a Nikon refurb, half price, so quite likely NOT the latest. (I got it with my refurb Z6 just cuz it seemed like a no-brainer at the refurb price.)

Should be pretty easy to tell as the second version lacks that unsightly tripod mount lump.

I hate to spend someone else's money, but since you mention the Z9, that's the one you should get. With anything else, you'll always regret not getting "the best." Spend the money once; use the camera forever.

What type of photography do you do. You need the Z9 specs or will the Z7II do enough? Need the 20fps? Better AF & non existent shutter lag? Z9! If not maybe the Z7II will do.

It’s not what will do. It’s what you want as long as you can afford it.

I ordered a Z9 on Oct 30 and have not yet received my camera. The wait is for real.

And yet Matt Granger got two copies as soon as they were released. It pays to be somebody.

I will have enough money within the next month to get a higher end mirrorless. My dilemma is that my retirement budget isn't going to allow me to get everything I would like. It looks like I could opt for a Z9 and use my Nikon legacy glass or go for the Z7ii and have enough for a couple of Z lenses. Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

You don’t provide us enough information for anyone to make an informed recommendation. What do you shoot? What’s your total budget? Do you shoot high speed action?

For optical sharpness, the Z lenses are the BEST out there - and by a fair margin. (I have studied the Imatest numbers) It would be a shame not to be able to take advantage of this property - I would do what I could to allow me to access at least some of these lenses !
