Is this a good lens coupled with the Nikon D800.

I use the 24-70 on my D800 and get amazing results. No problems at all.

This is my favorite lens. The image quality is excellent, it is always my go to lens, then the 70-200 2.8 and the 16-35.

I have the same combination of camera and lens and get some amazing pictures, hand held or on a tripod. The lens and camera both have AF & Manual focus. Might one be in one mode while the other is in a different mode? Not sure why else there would be a problem.

Return it, probably faulty, it's so good I'm trying to sell all my other gear, get the 70-200 and stick to those 2 lenses only!

I'm much happier with my D 7000 and it's a lot cheaper too
should I go to primary lenses instead of a zoom. I use it for general photography (scenics, HDR,casual portraits...)

Hi Ollie,
Just MHO
I have the D800 and use the Nikor 24mm-70mm f2.8 lens on it all the time. It's one of my primary lenses for shooting models. It is extremely fast and sharp. Now because I shoot a lot in natural light. At times I don't have enough light causing the auto focus on the lens to stops working. When this happens I have to switch to manual focus sometimes giving me less sharp pictures due to my focusing not the equipment.

almost all my shooting is on a tripod with the exception of family casual portraits. This is where I find the most problems with the autofocus and softness. I try to keep the shutter speed high (1/60 and up) It just must be something else, old dog and new tricks type of thing. I thought this camera might match large format cameras I used to have (hasselblad and Linhof) but so
far I'm still on quite a learning curve apparently Thanks for the reassurance, I'm happier that it is probably something I'm doing. Thats cheaper to fix.

There's the rub... you're spoiled! The quality's not quite there yet. You need a medium format digital! Pentax, Phase One, Mamiya, 'blad, even Leica.
Ooooo! The Pentax even comes in red:http://www.pentaximaging.com/medium-format/645D_Limited_Edition

(your Haselblad was only meduim format)

Go to the auto focus fine tune in the menu and play around with running tests from -1 to -5, and then from +1 to +5 and see if you can find a point where the focus is improved. You can then list that lens and assign it a #. Whenever you attach that lens to your D800, it will remember the best setting you entered.
