We just received a letter on April 1st that was posted on March 9th. It took 23 days to travel a little over 900 miles or about 41 miles per day. I could not walk the distance that fast but; on horse back it would take no more than 14 days.

I wonder why it took so long?

Sounds 'bout right if coming out of NOLA... a few months ago I sent a certified check to pay off my mortgage... figured it'd make it to Ohio before my next mortgage payment was due. Nope... took almost four weeks... so an extra month's interest. I could have driven to Ohio and hand delivered it and saved money. Postal service in NOLA has always had a bad reputation... deserved, from my experience.

My conclusion is that if I want to make sure a letter gets there on time then spend the extra money to track it. I did so early last month and postal service got the package to the destination overnight.

Why was it sent snail mail? Was there something in it other than a letter?

Sent a package to Taiwan on January 15th 2022 via USPS did not arrive until February 20th and it traveled via airplane, the USPS is a mess, at one point I did not receive mail for 4 days finally went to the local post office and asked what was going on and the answer was we are short staffed and the regular driver was on vacation, so I guess we don’t deliver mail asked if I had mail sitting in the back and got only half of what I was supposed to get, not to mention some of the people they hire are as dumb as a box of rocks, and others figure out how to steal gift cards that are sent through the postal service, we had three arrested at our post office for doing just that and before they were caught the estimated they stole over $25000.00.

In the 50's my wife then about 6 sent a letter addressed
Gramma 'name with held',
"name of street with held",
Toledo
and it was delivered. I think that the work ethic was much different then.
When at the post office I always get great help from the people at the counter.

side note the local gm truck plant has shut down for 2 weeks due to numerous parts shortages.

Who knows where the delay was. The letter was stamped using a postage meter machine so it could have been stamped and sat in the out box or misplace numerous times during the trip. The letter carried time sensitive information that would have been nice to know 2 weeks ago, so most times I would not even noticed. My guess is that it was transferred at least 4 times; so many places for things to go wrong.

With that said at least it was not on a truck that went up in smoke or picked up by a tornado.

Around here even tracking information is not a guarantee that it will arrive when it is supposed to or even that it will arrive where it is addressed to.
This week I have had two back to back days when a package was being delivered via USPS and I was watching the tracking all the way to the final point of it being delivered.
Both times it was delivered to the wrong place.
We live in a mobile home community and the mail is generally directed to the boxes but if it is a package that is supposed to be delivered the same carrier on consecutive days dropped it on the wrong porch.
The first time my wife called the post office who sent the driver back to retrieve it and get it to us. After that you would figure she would remember the next day which unit is mine.
But nope it was delivered to the wrong place again.

Actually, you're lucky. Here, if it is delivered at all, it takes a month from Manila to Baguio (same island), and if sent from or to the US, usually 3 months. Lady at the PO told me that our mail carrier doesn't like to deliver the mail, so sometimes he just doesn't.

I subscribe to a professional update service that sends me one volume each month. These volumes are essentially books, usually in the 1000-1200 page range. They are mailed out the first week of each month via USPS. I did not get my October or November volumes so the vendor sent me replacements via FedEx in December. I got them within a couple of days. Then in mid-January USPS delivered my November volume, 9 weeks after it had been mailed. Yesterday I got my October volume, 28 weeks after it had been mailed.

Are your books mailed first class or book rate, which could be much slower?

A word to the wise. Save your receipt. I mailed a priority mail package. Tracked it. USPS sent me a text that it had been delivered. I probably threw away the receipt. Nine days later the recipient told me they still hadn’t received it. My local post office told me to file a claim. Even though I had the tracking number and the clerk could verify that it had been “delivered” the USPS would not initiate a claim without the original receipt given to me when I mailed the package. Buyer beware.
