The air traffic controller's recurring nightmare: "Sorry, Bob, but you're the only one on today."

That's a picture of the actual plane traffic over the U. S. a couple of minutes ago.

And that's not all of them. This doesn't show drones, experimental aircraft or small planes flying VFR below radar.

Some people always find a way to make a bad situation even worse. (No offense intended)

The problem with this display is the size of the airplane symbols. If they were the actual size of the aircraft seen at the altitude of the image, they would be invisible, making the sky look empty. Although, it is amazing how many aircraft are in the air at any one time. Of course, when I was commuting to work on the freeways in Dallas, I would have sworn there were a million cars on those roads between 7:00 and 9:00 very weekday!

Doesn't Wonder Woman have an invisible plane?

At any given moment there are about 5,000 commercial airplanes in the sky over the United States.

A somewhat more realistic map illustration. https://www.flightradar24.com/39.84,-100.07/5

The total land area of the continental U.S. is just over 3.1M square miles, or something over 600 square miles per airplane. It isn't that simple as they all originate from and arrive at similar locations, 514 airports in the U.S. that handle commercial flights. That gives 10 planes per airport at any given moment, again not being exact as some airports handle many more than others.

There are another 2800 plus airports that handle civilian and corporate aviation that isn't commercial. That would account for some thousands more aircraft at any given time. But overall it isn't nearly as congested and hectic and potentially dangerous as the original shot suggests.

Many.many years ago I took the U.S. Civil Service exam to become a Air Traffic Controller. To my surprise I passed the test, got on the list to be trained to become an ATC. By the time I was notified that I could enter in the training program, I had come to my senses.

That Air Force plane is still circling near Ukraine's west border.
