Need help from MAC savvy person

I have an iMAC running Big Sur; an iPad running OS 15.3 and an old iPod with OS 6. I use the iPod in a speaker unit to play music while I do dishes, etc. I wanted to put some new music on the iPod from the iMac so I wired it up. Somehow I erased both the iPod and iMac. I have no music on either. I do still have my music on the iPad but have no idea how to move it from the iPad to the iMac safely. I know you can sync from iMac to iPad but I want to go from iPad to iMac. Can someone give me detailed instructions on how to do this? I am 80 and don’t completely trust my logic any more.

You should be able to back up the music from the ipad to the mac with itunes then transfer it to the ipod. I’m in the same situation with my ipad. I wiped out the music on my ipad. I have an iphone with the music but no computer to use for the process. I’m stuck! i’m going to look it up myself to see what I can do also.

iTunes no longer exists. It is reincarnated as Apple Music. They split off some of its functions.

My advice to the OP is to visit a local Apple Store if there is one, or call Apple Support at 1-800-275-2273.

Another option is to join the Apple Support Forums at Apple.com. They no doubt will have an answer for this!

Unfortunately you can not transfer from Mac to iPad or iPod iTunes does not exist if you were to have a pc with iTunes on it that would work if your music was backed up to the iCloud, went through this situation and discovered it can not be done unless you subscribe to Apple Music.

You do not have to subscribe... I don't.

Do your various Macs have airdrop? If so that might work for you.

The iPad and iMac do have AirDrop but the iPod does not. I have never used it because I simply don’t understand it. I am in the process of redoing my music in the iMac. Most of it is on cds. Will keep me occupied for a month at least.

Once you process all your CDs to .aac files, back them up onto at least two different media.

Backups are so easy to ignore the need for, but so easy to regret when you don't have them. My son just bought an enterprise class (5-year warranty) 16 TB hard drive, in part, to back up all his video creations. Part of it is for Time Machine backups. This is for backup of OTHER backups.

Do you do regular backups on your Mac? If so, you should be able to move your music from an earlier backup to your Mac. If you don't do backups...you should!

Yes, I do backups to a SSD SanDisk Extreme. Via Time Machine. But when I tried to access the previous backup, I could find no way to access any detail on that day. And I could find no way to actually restore to that day. I couldn’t tell the computer I wanted to access my music to restore it. I use the backup mainly for my photos but doubt I could restore anything if I lost my photos. They are at least in the cloud. I admit technology started leaving me behind when they quit using DOS.

Go to Apple.com, click on “support”, then select “Mac.” Somewhere on that page you can set up a call with Apple support, and they can help you out.
