I'm interested in which Nikon DX lenses members find best suited to general photography i.e. bit of landscape, bit of portrait, bit of action and anything else which pops up in the viewfinder - those sometimes referred to as walk about lenses. I just sold my 18-300mm as I was finding it too heavy and I'm looking for something lighter maybe with better IQ. Checking the 20,000+ shots I've taken with various Nikon APS-C cameras over the last 23 years I find over 75% to be at less than 140mm (210mm 35mm Eq.) so I'm thinking smaller lenses anyway.
By the way I DO NOT want links to various web sites giving reviews. I can find those myself quite easily. I want real life opinions not paid for "reviews"

Since most of your shirts are around 140, the af-s 18-140 3.5-5.6 G ED is a great lens. It is on one of my nikons full time, and most used.

The only lens I had for my D5200 was the 16-85, which served me well for years (I still have it but I also have a Z5 now). I do mostly landscape and almost never found myself wanting more zoom, but if you do wildlife you'd probably want a bit more reach.

As I reread JohnR's post he said the 18 to 300 was too heavy. The lens weighs 19.2 oz. He wants a lighter lens that covers at least 210 in reach. Most of the lenses recommend by other Heghoggers where at least that weight.

I think what he wants does not exist. It seems to me he is concerned about weight and wants a does everything setup. Maybe it is time for a bridge camera like the Sone cyber shot dsc-rx10 IV weighing 2.41 lb, may be too heavy. But; has a 20.1 mp sensor and a lens that goes from 8.8 to 220 mm or 24-600 35 mm equivalent. But some B&H reviews are very negative; while most people seem to be happy.

I suggest John contacts someone like B&H and ask them what his choices are. He lives in Australia so that may complicate things.

Actually he said “210 FF equivalent. The 18-140 would fit the bill except it’s only about 2 oz less than the 18-300, albeit probably better quality. The 18-200 actually weighs slightly more than the 18-300, although the Tamron 18-200 is almost 6 oz lighter. The 16-85 has been suggested but it’s also only 2 oz lighter. The only real weight savings would be to go back to the 18-55 kit lens and carry an extra telephoto zoom for longer shots.

I have and use the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 on Canon. It is a great lens and has scored highest on Imatest for normal range zooms ......Sorry, no it is not a "Nikon" lens .....

I don’t think anybody has taken the issue of weight seriously.

The 18-55mm lens is perfect for a walking around lens.

If you need more reach, the 55-200mm lens is tiny.

Get the newest versions of both lenses.

Put whichever one you are not using in a pocket or waist pack and you have a complete kit that weighs under two pounds.

Add an SB-400 for fill flash and you are still under 2.5 pounds.

The above two lenses and the flash, along with a D5600, is the lightest, most versatile kit I have ever used.

All FX Lenses will work on a DX camera. All of them even ones that are 50 years old

Alas, you're ignoring the camera body involved and Nikon's alphabet soup of compatibility issues. Not all F-mount lenses are the same, depending on the camera model involved.

The camera model is the D5500, with no internal focus motor, dropping AF compatibility with a wide and long history of F-mount lenses.

What you're saying is true, but I don't think that any of the lenses actually mentioned in this thread are old enough to require a focusing motor in the body. Any lens that says AF-S on the outside will work properly on this camera.

3. It will give you (approximately) the equivalent of a 48-480mm lens on an FX camera. No wide angle at all. Maybe great for photographing birds.
4. ... I just wanted to comment on the recommendation.

Youre using Canon math. This is a Nikon question.

I have the AF-S 16-85 3.5 - 5.6G DX lens on my D5100 as a walkaround lens.
Not to big or heavy with good sharpness and a nice range.

From the Nikon alphabet soup, we can pick three other more reliable characters:

DX - any / all DX lenses reliably work on the D5500, any D5xxx series body.

G - any / all 'gelded' lens will reliably work on the D5500, any D5xxx series body.

FX lenses "work" on DX cameras. DX lenses don't work to their full potential on FX cameras.

If the F-mount Nikon brand lens won't autofocus on the D5500, is that an example of "work"?
