Appreciate the suggestions to use Nikon software, but their programs pretty much suck.
That’s what I meant by “clunky and crash 💥 prone”
The Fast Raw Reviewer program is probably your next best option and I believe they offer a free trial.
Irfanview is free and super fast and no bloatware or advertisements.
Edit: Irfanview also has a ton of other global image tools. One of the biggest is the non-loss image rotation.

I use faststone image viewer. It also has a few edit features but in real editing I'm a Lightroom guy.
Do you mean retouching using Lightroom? (FYI the term editing in video means reviewing and cutting and splicing.)
LR facilitates reviewing of raw files so I’m curious why you would use two programs when one will do both?

While your definition of editing may be true for video, I think most people would use the term to mean post-processing of still photos. Try Googling "Lightroom editing" - you'll get over 50 million results.
Faststone. Free and easy.

NX Studio or what ever it is called from Nikon. Free download. Also Faststone Image Viewer. Both free.

FastRawViewer is arguably best at this for many reasons. See their website for why. It is only a viewer, not an editor.

ON1 Photo Raw features “Browse” mode. You can view, rate, delete, even edit from ANYWHERE—desktop, hard drive, local drive, cloud based such as Dropbox — all without importing anything.

That’s what I often use. Otherwise MAC Preview. Work fine.
My PC views NEF files, no problem.
I've been using Faststone for years and it is great for quickly importing your photo files for reviewing before editing. Simple to use, it is free and it works. It uses the folder and file structure you may already be using for storing your files so it is very intuitive.
