If you happen to be using a Mac, then try Preview (on every Mac). Windows has something similar.

I use faststone image viewer. It also has a few edit features but in real editing I'm a Lightroom guy.

I use win 10 and File Explorer, which reads .nef files using the Windows Photo app. In File Explorer I go to "View" then usually select "Extra Large Icons" to scroll through the images. Once I see one I like, just double click on it and a new Photos window opens up with the image. You can size the window to anything you like and you can even zoom in. You can right click on the image and select "file info" and it gives you the time and date the image was taken, ISO, shutter speed, f stop, resolution in pixels. You can even select the "slideshow" option after clicking on the 3 dots in the upper right hand corner and it will go though all the images in that directory one at a time in the window size you choose. This might be helpful if you use Windows: https://www.howtogeek.com/320942/how-to-use-windows-10s-built-in-photos-app/

I browse in Photoshop Bridge and if I see one that is special it can be selected and processed.

You can use the free Nikon software ViewNX 2 or NX Studio.

The advantage of using manuf software to view raw files is the manuf software always renders the best color image. Disadvantages are manuf softwares are a bit clunky and crash prone and they only work for their raw fines.

On a Mac Preview won't show them if the camera is too new for an older operating system on the computer.

You can get software from Nikon that will allow you to view and edit raw files. I believe it's free - just download it.

Appreciate the suggestions to use Nikon software, but their programs pretty much suck.

Apple is pretty good about updating their camera raw which is used by all the macOS versions, but you have to keep up on the updates for that version.
