I've never heard it called anything but church rock. Nice image. Did you hike in close, or simply zoom? If you hiked, did you get a permit to do so?

This is a late afternoon photo of El Capitan, not to be confused with the grant wall in Yosemite National Park, California. The Navajo name is Agathlan. El Capitan/Agathlin is a volcanic plug. Several million years ago a volcano erupted, While the volcano became dormant the volcano was eroded away and all that remained was the cooled lava that formed the rock formation that you see in the photograph. The "plug" is much harder than the rock that formed the volcano.

El Capitan is about 25 million years old and is 1,436 feet tall. Sometimes El Capitan is called Church Rock. The direction is to the North. Its location is between Keyenta, Arizona along the highway then lye would take to get to the entrance of Monument Valley.

Nice shot. And glad you included some of the geological history. At the other El Capitan in Yosemite, those beautiful formations are the leftover granite hearts of long dead volcanoes.

Great image. Thanks for the tip. I will be at Monument Valley for 3 days at the end of May. I will stop by on the way from Flagstaff.
