In 2020, the Polar Plunge was one of the last major events the city hosted before the COVID-19 outbreak brought life to a standstill. The 2021 event was held virtually due to the pandemic, though some participants still took a dip in Lake Michigan.

Local WGN legend meteorologist Tom Skilling had the honor of taking the lake’s temperature before the plunge. The thermometer read 42 degrees, but Skilling estimated it was actually around 37 degrees.

With the air and water temperatures both in the 30s, it was certainly chilly. But the smiles, cheering and the cause kept participants going.

Haha - I won't do it either!

He updated his comment.

Great set...really shows how cold the water is. We have the same thing here for various charities...I will donate but there is no way your getting me in that water!

Thank you Cindy! I haven't been into Lake Michigan in years. In former days, I reserved my annual dip to Labor Day Weekend, maybe the warmest point of the year, and even then, the water is takes-your-breath-away cold.
