Nikon quoted me about $500 for a lens repair on that same lens last year after I dropped it on cement and smashed the rear mount. But they actually charged me less when they billed me for the actual repair which I appreciated.

$520 to repair my Nikon 200-500 f/5.6 seems a little excessive to me. The problem was a small screw had come out and it would no longer zoom.

Sad to hear. I have that Nikon lens along with 6 others and I must be blessed. I have been buying and using Nikon products for 50 years and have never had to return anything for repair. Hoping I don't jinx myself with this post.

I disagree. I've bought Canon screws and Sigma screws and the Sigma screws were way less expensive than the Canon screws.

Can supply us with bills that you actually bought screws for these 2 companies or you just being a troll?
Love more particular proof you had to buy screws for 2 different lenses from 2 different companies and you repaired both lenses yourself.

If your lens was less than 5 years old, it should have been a warranty repair, assuming you are the first owner. After all the lens has been on the market less than 7 years.

It's 6 years old almost to the day.

Did you get a warranty on the repair?

My Canon had to be serviced and on line they ask questions and give repair estimates, which are based on your described problem. Canon held to their estimate which included a complete cleaning

If all they did was replace 1 missing small screw then I'd say you maybe got a little screwed. If they had to completely disassemble the lens to replace the missing screw, and cleaned all the optics while it was apart, then maybe you didn't get screwed. I had a Canon lens shed an internal screw once. The resulting damage cost around $600 to replace parts and clean and repair the lens. Considering the amount of usage that lens gets and the excellent work the technician did, I believe I paid a very fair price. Replacement cost new would have been around $2400.

This is true, however there should have been a statement accompanying the returned lens showing labor costs. A high hour charge would indicate the situation you described but lacking that, I would inquire.

I’m jealous. I once tried to hang a picture on a wall. The head of the nail, not the point of the nail, was facing the wall where I wanted the picture to go. I figured I had a nail that was meant for the opposite wall and gave up.

For starters, just exactly where did I say I did the repairs myself. Well, the Sigma I did; just had to replace the missing screw. The two lenses I referred to are a Canon EF 28-70 f/2.8L that I had repaired at Authorized Camera Repair in Willow Grove PA, and a Sigma 150-600 Sport. The main reason the Sigma screw was more expensive than the Canon screw is mainly because of its physical size, and what the screw is used for. The Canon screw was replaced as part of a major repair. The repair shop gave me a list of all the parts they replaced and the cost of the parts. I had to replace the Sigma screw because I lost the original.
As for being a troll, it sure looks like you are the one who has trolled me. You'd love proof?! KMASH!

I own a microscope sales and service company. If we must go inside your lens to repair, it is going to cost you for the reasons mentioned above. In the service department we only have time, knowledge and experience to sell.

You bought screws for someone else?
The repairing of a lens isn't a Diys project for most.
You call me a troll and use inappropriate language which I reported. KMASH IS JUST RUDE.
go fix your lens

How much was a lens that would not zoom worth? How much can you sell it for now?

I just paid $721 for the same issue for my Nikon 80-400. As a paperweight on the closet shelf, it was expensive. I could now sell on eBay for around $1200. Pretty good ROI, though I don’t plan to sell.

I thought it would be fair to update my lens experience. Just got it back by UPS. On a lens that would barely zoom unless using two hands....
.... For $680 plus tax and shipping, Nikon service: cleaned external glass, inspected zoom ring function, inspected focus ring and switch functions, inspected aperture function, inspected and replaced the cam tube, inspected and replaced VR unit, replaced rubber ring, confirmed focus accuracy to factory spec and adjusted AF operation, inspected shooting function and communication with camera and replaced encoder, checked resolution, checked lens mount, and a general check and clean that has the lens looking almost mint new.
The zoom ring is still tighter than I anticipated, but the lens looks and works like new!

You can report all you want. I simply posted 5 letters. If you assigned a rude meaning to those 5 letters, then that's your doing, not mine. By themselves, the letters are meaningless. Again, I never said I repaired the lens, and I did say it was repaired in a shop. I even named the repair shop if you want to contact them. Also, please stop trolling me or I will report you, and maybe you will be the first member that I block.
