Thank you, Dennis. More coming! Yeah, I like them a lot. I just wish I could figure out the meaning of some of them. But, like modern art, maybe they mean nothing except the artists' vision. But there is no doubt about the meaning of some of the erotic, (maybe pornographic) Freemont stuff! Don't know if I should post that or not (I've never seen it in Anasazi R.A.)
And, truth be told, it could be me seeing something that's not really there. But I don't think so!
Thank you, Dennis. More coming! Yeah, I like them ... (show quote)

If you just post the photos then it would be up to the viewer to decide what it means and keep you off the pointy end of the hook where you might get CAUGHT. Just a suggestion.

Thanks very much, texan. But it wasn't just happenstance. I've been familiar with Anasazi R.A. all my life. I've known about Nine Mile Canyon for years and wanted to see it in person. That is Fremont country and Fremont Rock Art, and I knew it was different. And Boy, is it different! For one thing it's Pictograph (paint) in the case of the Anasazi and Petroglyph (engraving) in the case of the Fremont. (for the most part!). But the subject matter is very different too. I suspect I will get in trouble for this, but in my opinion, The Anasazi R.A. is more concerned with the spiritual world and the Fremont more concerned with the physical world. And I suspect that is reflected in their differing world views. There, I've said it! Bring it on!!.
I'm going to make another R.A. Panel post with what, was to me, a very surprising panel. I'll point it out in the post.
Thanks again for your response.

Seems as if you have a right to what to you think.

THE FIRST TIME I SHOWED MY TWINS PICTURES LIKE THESE AND TOLD THEM ANCIENT MEN CARVED THEM IN STONE THEY HAD A DIFFERENT IDEA. THEY SAID, I THOUGHT YOU SAID LIFE WAS HARD BACK THEN. THE MEN HUNTED AND PROTECTED THE TRIBE WHILE THE WOMEN GATHERED, COOKED AND RAISED THE CHILDREN. SO, THEY SUGGESTED THAT WHILE THE MOMS AND DADS WERE DOING THEIR THING THE OLDER KIDS WOULD HAVE BEEN PLAYING LIKE ALL KIDS DO AND THESE ROCK CARVINGS ARE JUST THE CHALKBOARD CREATIONS OF CHILDREN AT PLAY. IMAGINE THAT, IT TOOK SOME KIDS TO SEE THESE ETCHINGS IN A WHOLE NEW LIGHT. I NOW AGREE WITH THEM. IT'S ALL JUST CHILD'S PLAY AND THEIR ARTISTIC EXPRESSIONS LEFT IN STONE.

That could be true, and I've thought the same thing with particular glyphs. But some of them show quite a bit of sophistication, especially when you think that they were all done stone on stone. Maybe it's a mixture of both. Teenagers working under accomplished artist to learn the trade, so to speak. Thank you for your comments.

Yup. That answers that, I guess. Kids did it! Of course, some kids are more... what's that word? precocious? Yeah, precocious! Not to mention that some kids are clearly more imaginative than.............. some other kids. And besides, kids are now (and have probably always been) the only ones with time on their hands to fritter away like the slackards they actually are, y'know?

Plus, also & too, some kids have really keen insight, and that makes a great case for why kids oughta be heart surgeons and fighter jet airplane pilots and maybe, just maybe, the ones who could invent perpetual energy, too! What the heck; they've got the time and energy to do that kind of stuff, so why not?

(That caps key of yours permanently stuck, 'bro?)

And Chief: my sincere apologies for gratuitously sticking some kid's drawing onto your post.

The rock drawings were in great condition. Who do you think made them?

Well, those posted here were made by the Freemont Culture people who were more or less contemporaries of the Anasazi Culture people. They lived from around 3000 to 2000 years ago plus or minus a thousand or two depending on who you talk too. And of course, they didn't just pop into and out of existence. Archaic Indians have been in North America for at least 12,000 years, probably more, and were probably the ancestors of all the later North American Indian populations.
As for the rock art depicted here, if you look carefully there are almost always older, less visible drawings/carvings located with or very near the more visible ones. I don't think anyone knows if these are just from earlier generations of the same people or from a different people altogether from long before. Or a combination of the two.
It seems that good, protected places made of good stone were very desirable for whatever artists were living in a particular place at a given time.

1. These guys were very impressed with Big Horn Sheep. Note the fainter, I'm assuming older, Petroglyphs.
2. The inventor of the Gentlemans' dress tie. He should be shot!!
3. They must have been VERY impressed with some of the other local wildlife.
4. This is the only place I have ever seen Owls depicted in Petroglyphs.

Again, this is Fremont people artwork. Rather than Anasazi. Very different. There is even some erotic, maybe even pornographic, artwork here, which I have never seen before.
I hope you like it.
I realize this isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I have lot's more if anyone is interested. It fascinates me!

Well, yeah. But I'm a long way from a professional in art, archaeology or anthropology. And I know there are folks here much more knowledgeable and experienced about those subjects than I am. Thanks, Dennis.

Hi, Eugene. Yeah, I saw that. Seems like some people think it's a good idea to shoot at the figures on the walls. Those are two pock marks from bullets making up the "eyes" of the "face". I don't know if it was deliberate or just accidental placement of the bullets. Bullet pock marks are common the entire length of the canyon.
