Thanks Earnest; Mr Malarz has pointed out the "second one lacks a point of focus with respect to a subject"
and I reckon he has a valid point. In fact, it was precisely that, that compelled me to crop the right 2/3rds out.
When I did that, I missed viewing what I had cropped out, and that is why I've asked for the view point of others.

Viewing the two together and the comments posted so far have helped
me I realize why I (sorely) miss the cropped elements in the (more) cropped image.

You really need to do the double download to see the facial expression
and the direction of the gaze of the
woman in the background of the second inset... which is at 1:1 of the 4800x3232 image not presented.
Thanks Earnest; Mr Malarz has pointed out the &quo... (show quote)

I'm glad you said do the double download! That expression of the woman in the back has a rather horrified expression on her face! I'm not sure what is going on there -- maybe horrified because the woman the waitress is talking to just ordered rat on toast, or mentioned a snow storm would be hitting in the next 20 minutes, or maybe mentioned someone's name like asking the waitress if John still worked there but was told he had passed away and John was the woman's cousin. Who knows, but it sure is a strange expression for someone having a casual meal.

There's something strange going on around the head of the woman in black. I don't remember it being there the first time you posted that picture.

Being the hornball that I am, the first thing I noticed was the waitress' legs in the cropped version. In the uncropped version the first thing I noticed was the waitress' legs. LOL

The way I imagine it, the woman ordering and the waitress were flirting...
and the girl in the background was (in reality) watching (possibly) her waitress girlfriend
flirting with another woman... explaining her grief stricken/heart broken expression.

You never know though, perhaps the girl with the grief stricken/heart broken expression
was very hungry (as it was late for lunch) and felt it was her turn to be served and not the other womans
turn to be served, explaining her expression.

I reckon the above scenarios are more plausible than rat on toast or snow during summer... in that
part of Australia Bridges lol

I thought the band aid on her ankle was kinda cute
in a feral sort of way :-)

They tell two different stories. Both are interesting, but I prefer the less cropped version of the two. I lingered on it much longer.

I like the first photo more - it details the interaction of these two people as has been said. I find the second one a little distracting with action on either side of the photo - however = it does convey the atmosphere of the outdoor dining area and would be a great photo in an advertisement for the restaurant.

These both serve their purposes, which are quite different. The first shows a more intimate interaction between the customer and the waitress, while the second shows the outdoor restaurant scene. The real question here is what you want to convey to your viewers. For me, the first photo has much more impact than does the entire scene. Again, the real question is what do YOU want to convey?

Both are well done, but they tell two different "stories." So what story do you want to tell? Two people engaged in a conversation? Or a group of people dining in an outdoor location, each engaged in their separate moments plus the lone girl looking in. I don't think it's one or the other. it's both, but for different purposes.

Each presents a different kind of atmosphere. Since you're asking, I'd crop put those two posts on the right. The first one shows a nice, isolated, personal scene, and the larger one shows the location, with everything that's going on. Each one serves a different purpose. You could isolate the woman on the right for another type of show.

Fortunately, movies and TV have let me see lots of Australia because I know I will never get there.

In the first shot the mountain peak is a distraction for the focal point of the two women in conversation. It really doesn't add the context needed. In the second shot, the lodge and setting are more complete, as is the mountain view, providing a more imteresting composition, imho.

When I look at the second image I see two pictures. The first one is the human interest shot you created with the crop of image one. The second is a snapshot. IMHO

My preference is the 2nd image as it tells more of a story. And it really looks great in B&W.

Both versions of the image have there merits... but are also very different.

I lean toward the wider 2nd image for it's greater complexity. The 1st image of just the two subjects seems to me just two people talking to each other. Big whoop!

There are other ways to crop the image (and perhaps some slight straightening possible). The broader image can be tightened up a bit by using a 5:7 aspect ration instead of 2:3.

See below... I sort of like cropping into the tables on the right (4:5 aspect ratio). I like how the two people whose faces you can see are sort of opposite each other... "bookends" of a sort, and both looking "into" the image. It's interesting how they are both looking at the faceless group in the middle, but sitting apart from them.
