I've done a bunch with aluminyze.com. I always use glossy white. I've spoken to a number of people selling at art fairs and they all use Aluminyze for some reason; could be a coincidence.Try to have at least 300 dpi and more if possible. Metal prints show way more detail than canvas, so tack sharp vibrant images are spectacular, but unforgiving for technically imperfect shots. E.g. a 16x20 inch print should be at least 4800x6000 roughly 28 mega pixels. I use Topaz gigapixel ai for anything larger than 16x20 and shoot with a Canon 5Ds (50 MP) and now R5 (45 MP).

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who has had prints made on metal. I make large prints...up to 40 inches wide...but always on canvas. I'd like to hear your thoughts on metal prints. How good are they and are they worth the price. Thanks.

I have used mpix and aluminyze to print on metal. The colors are outstanding. The price may be slightly higher but if you consider you need no frame…it is quite affordable. I would recommend matte prints. Mine are glossy and reflect more than I would prefer.

I live in a rented townhouse that doesn't like nails or screws in the wall to hang prints, only picture hanging strips. Are large metal prints too heavy for that? And can they be printed with flat backs so strips can be used? 3M says its Command Strips will hold up to 16 lbs.

I have a new build...only use command strips on my wall. The metal prints typically are lighter weight than a print and frame. I use several command strips by the way...on larger prints.

Also, the float mounting provides ability for the command strip attachment on metals. I believe it is the standard and no extra cost. Look at the mounting on any of the metal prints you buy. Each printer differs in the type of float mounts they use.

Bay Photo does great aluminum and Acrylic for prints of any size that one would want as long as you have a proper sized shot and make sure that you have a clean image to print form. I like to do my Landscapes broken up into 3 sizes and then Hang it on the Wall, it is simply brilliant when printed on Acrylic.

I used metal prints of African animals to hang in a kids waiting area in a doctors office. The metal prints are attractive and easy to hang. They appear much more like a mounted paper print then prints on canvas.

I agree with those who have said Metal Prints are vivid and the color is really good. I can easily see how given a side by side comparison people would opt for the Metal most if not every time. I use White House Custom Color (whcc.com) in Minnesota. Have only done a dozen pics so far but very pleased with the results. They do a great job and are very helpful. Getting set up with them is pretty painless (they can walk you thru it on the phone), once done the process is smooth and quick. If your selling your work they will ship directly to the end customer.
Hope you find this helpful...

Agree with you re: the "canvas look" on metal, even with low gloss/matte finish . . . metal lacks the texture of canvas, so the look doesn't translate. Metal is also more expensive than canvas, sometimes significantly so. Hard to beat high gloss metal for sharp, vibrant landscapes, however.

By the way, Black River Imaging, an affiliate of Bay Photo, offers the same quality as Bay with one important advantage: BRI doesn't add shipping costs to the total charge, whereas Bay does. On larger metal prints that can represent a meaningful savings. I 'd recommend checking BRI for your next metal order.
Agree with you re: the "canvas look" on ... (show quote)

Will check BRI but I always find a coupon for Bay from 20-40%.

I ordered nine prints on metal of family members. I think they are worth the extra money. They look great hanging on the wall.

If you are willing to max out at 12x18, then I have had outstanding results from Costco, believe it or not. Very good prints, and they are only around $35 a piece. On-line, of course.
