I think the radio station KDKA in Pittsburgh was the first commercial radio station. As someone mentioned a few days ago, stations east of the Mississippi have their station names begin with a "W," while those in the west begin with a "K." How does KDKA fit into that?

Essentially you are correct in that KDKA was the first commercial radio station and because it was the first one, it is east of Missippii river, and that is the division between the K and W call signs. However, there is one other that I know of and that is WOAI 1200am in San Antonio. How that happened I won't even venture to guess at.

Well, perhaps not THE first commercial station but the callsign was issued before there were regular broadcast stations. KDKA was a sequential callsign and other callsigns issued in the list were marine stations.

Well, Pittsburgh is in western Pennsylvania, maybe that has something to do with it

W1AW is the amateur (ham) radio station for the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), an organization representing ham radio interests.
