You have the same problem I encountered last fall. Your processor is 32-bytes and software today is written requiring 64-bytes machines…

The processor is NOT 32 bits. lntel Core I-7s (introduced in 2008) are 64 bit CPUs (and it’s 64 bit, not 64 byte). So much incorrect computer information being propogated.

I had a mid 2015 5K iMac with 32 gigs of ram that I had upgraded with an installed 1T ssd. I still found that it was slow when processing images using Capture One. My current camera is a Fuji GFX 100S with 100 MP files. So I figured every 7 years I should bite the bullet and upgrade. I traded the iMac for a new MacBook Pro 14" M1 with 32 Gigs. I also went all the way and purchased an LG 27" 5K monitor that connects directly into the lap top. The difference in processing photos is amazing. The M1 mac is fantastic. Go for it!

100 MP data files are a challenge for any but the newest, fastest machines, but very few users are using 100 MP MF cameras. Likely not applicable to the OP.

My other camera is a Canon 5dsr and I had similar problems processing those 50MP full frame files. Although, I agree with you that the larger the photo files, the more work the computer has to do to process them.

The M1 Macs have received fantastic reviews. You can get the basic MacBook Air and process just fine with 8GB of memory. "M1 MacBook Air OVER One Year Later! NOTHING Else Comes Close!" Watch this - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NQesyAf849Q

Yes, I'm sure I have 32 gigs, and I purchased the machine from a photographer who added the extra memory.

To be sure of how much ram you have, click on the apple icon up in the the left hand corner of the screen in the menu bar and then on "about this Mac", that will show you how much memory you have.

If only 28% of your drive is “free” space, your system has NO ROOM TO BREATHE. It needs room for virtual memory storage. So:

Get a large external drive, in addition to a larger external backup drive, and copy all your files to both of them (use Time Machine for backups!). Then erase all the files you don’t need daily from the iMac internal drive.

Consider an SSD internal drive upgrade from OWC. If all you have is a 5400 RPM internal drive, that’s also a HUGE bottleneck. The latest MacOS systems assume use of SSD storage devices for the system and applications.

If you want a NEW iMac, WAIT for the Apple Silicon models to be released. Intel Macs will be obsolete soon, as Apple is transitioning to their own systems on chips. They are worth the wait!

Clean My Mac and Time Machine are excellent apps. I recently had a virus on my 2015 iMac and had the machine restored to factory settings. When I and the computer were back home all my data and settings were fully restored using Time Machine! Brilliant, and I sighed a huge relief.

Don't replace it. I recently bought a new iMac and have nothing but trouble with it. It took 3 months to get it to work. Cannot use the current operating system. Never buy it from the Apple online store because if you take it to the Apple store for help, they will not help you. If you need another computer, buy from some other company, not apple.

I use an iMac PRO and Lr can give me some agita id I don't keep up with it. I have over 300,000 images in my library which only makes things worse. I just completed some (expensive) steps that returned some speed. I moved the Lr Catalogue to an external TB4 SSD. Big difference. I also moved my more current files from an external drive system to an external TB4 SSD system. Better again. Don't know if your system has TB ports, but I just extended the life of my 2017 system. Sorry to say but fast cost bucks, but Adobe offers many suggestions on how to speed up Lightroom, way too many to discuss here. Check their site or use Google. Bill B also offered wise advice, as always. Best of luck. If you want more info, PM me.

From Mac:

Apple Silicon Mac Lineup

Apple's first Macs with Apple silicon chips, the late 2020 ‌MacBook Air‌, MacBook Pro, ‌Mac mini‌ and the 2021 iPad Pro and ‌iMac‌ all use the M1 chip, which is Apple's first custom-designed Arm-based chip for Mac. The 2021 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models use the M1 Pro and M1 Max, upgraded variants of the ‌M1‌ that are more powerful.

I don't know for sure, but it appears that has happened already?

A virus on a Mac? And you restored from the last backup but then didn’t restore the virus? I call BS.

Do tell? Odd because I bought in line and took mine in to the store same as if I had bought it at the store.

Unfortunately Apple has had problems with appoint due to Covid shutdowns but that seemed to be ending now.

Are you sure you have 32 gigs of memory? I have the identical machine except I have 16 Gigs 8 of which were installed at my local Apple Store. I thought there wasn't room to instal anymore.

I don't have Imac, but on many computers there are say 4 slots and makers usually use the cheapest size. So, you may get 2x4, but then can only add another 2x4 = 16. To get 32, you might need to replace everything with new chips. I also believe memory once at least needed to match, so no mixing sizes. I bought a new PC this past summer and got them to give me credit for the existing chips to upgrade to 32GB as I remember.

Forgot this: If you computer is only doing this some of the time, check your settings for updates of any kind. I have had similar issues and then found it was updating the anti-virus or windows as the computer had been off for a time, travel, etc. Could disconnect from internet when it happens and see if it helps.
Nothing wrong with buying a new computer, but then again it could be like buying a new car because it behaves poorly because you forgot the 1000 lbs of cement in the trunk.

My iMac is 8 years old, manufactured in 2014, purchased used, and I'm to a point now that working with it for photo editing at times boarders on maddening due to its slowness. I use this machine almost exclusively for PS and LR, and while on some days it seems fine, on others it seems that every adjustment I make triggers the spinning wheel that sits for well over a minute. I've spoken with Adobe support, and even after they assisted in making some settings adjustments to optimize speed, I'm still facing the same issue. I've also spoken to someone at AppleCare who was not able to offer any new informations. So, here's what I've done so far...

- Reinstalled LR and PS
- Created a new catalog in LR
- Optimized LR catalog
- Cleared cache in LR and PS
- Reduced the time when both LR and PS are open simultaneously
- Watched the Activity Monitor for CPU usage and Memory Pressure - this does show excessive memory pressure (yellow and red on graph) from time to time
- Scanned for Viruses and Malware

And here are the particulars of my machine...

iMac (Retina 5K, 27", Late 2014)
Processor: 4 GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7
Memory: 32 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: AMD Radeon R9 M290X 2 GB
Storage: 1.12TB (320 GB available)

As you can imagine, I'd prefer to not buy a new machine, but at this point, I'm willing to bight the bullet if it will finally mean I no longer have to sit and watch that ball just spin and spin!

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide, which will be greatly appreciated.
