That's a wonderful story. Whoever sent you that camera is truly a mensch.

I recently posted my desire to move from a crop sensor and bridge camera to a reasonably priced FX model. My post asked for help from fellow UHH’s as to models that were decent and would stay within my modest budget.
I had four pages of responses. All helpful and many highly and strongly varied.

Then I received a response wherein the UHH asked me to PM him. And I did so. He replied that he would be sending me a Nikon D700 no longer needed as he had more advanced bodies as well as a mirrorless. All he asked for was my address.

I was blown away and gushed my thanks!

Many had suggested that I save up additional funds and bump up to a D610, D750, etc. so that was my plan. However this generous gentleman has now allowed me to learn with a still sound body at no expense. I will buy a used lens and begin honing my skills. If I decide to move on to a later model FX, I shall pay forward this D700 and my FZ1000 bridge camera.

It is highly refreshing and heart lifting (in this time of such great divisiveness) to be a part of such a helpful and generous group of folks.

I have kept this donor’s identity to myself as I am thinking that would be his desire.
Kudos to all of you!

Kindness and generosity always trump hatefulness and the need to always be right. There are still many good people in this world, some of which happen to subscribe to this site.

35 prime

Thanks. Have decided the 35mm. However, I am highly confused with all of the many variations of this prime: D, G, etc.
Also, it appears that some have a built in focus motor which would not be necessary since the D700 has the motor in the body.
So, specifically, which iteration should I buy?
Thank you for the help!

That is a fantastic story, thank you for sharing it.

Someone mentioned that the donor is likely to get some unexpected kindness, and I agree. But to the OP, please use this as an opportunity to pay it forward. Perform a random act of kindness to someone you don't know (or someone you do know). When I find unexpected good fortune, I tend to pay for the next person's order at the drive-thru. Makes me feel good, and hopefully, it brings a little light to their day too.

What a great story! That is certainly a grand gesture of good karma. The D700 is a great learning tool, still capable of making great images. Enjoy.

I believe you are going to love your new D700. I am also heartened to hear that a member of this forum gifted it to you. When you get a lens, and when you get the chance, please post a photo here of what you’ve been able to do with your new camera.

Thank you for the help!

You can buy whichever fits your budget as they will all work with the D700.

The G lenses are usually AF-S lenses which do have built-in motors. They also lack the aperture ring which generally is not important since when you use a lens with an aperture ring you turn it to the smallest aperture and leave it there. You then choose the aperture by turning the control ring on the camera, especially when you use aperture priority.

AF Nikkors and AF-D Nikkors do not have built-in motors and are usually cheaper than the G lenses. They do have aperture rings when you need them. The AF-D lenses will have the D in the title of the lens on the barrel such as 50mm f/1.8D. The D lenses may be a few dollars more than the AF Nikkors as they are newer. The D on the AF-D lenses stands for distance as the lens sends distance information to the camera to use in flash calculations.

Hope this clears things up.

I am also blown away. What a great kind gesture. We don't hear of this very often. Enjoy. Thank you for sharing. And to the person that have it to you, thank you too.

Ask him/her if they would mind having their name put up. That person deserves to be praised and acknowledged.
