The Sony announcement came with six (6) qualifiers for how they've self-rated themselves at #1. If Canon sold more total mirrorless cameras in NA in 2021, and they needed only four (4) qualifiers to layout this market leadership position, who is really #1?
Every one know Nikon is the true leader in optic manufacturing.

My old Ford 8N can take that bet.
It's easy to get excited...or non plussed by it all...from the view of a stander by.
But it is always good from a business perspective on who is doing well...getting enough coin back on investments (which is in turn used to keep them competitive and in the quick paced tech race)...and who isn't.
Financials are the signs on the photography road we travel....ignore the signs or not...up to you.
Now Canon and Sony are in a bit of a pissing match...Canon doesn't like that press release...naturally.
Ebb and flow of markets is nothing new.
Always best to look at the 5 year (minimum) financials of everyone.
Canon...had some red...but turned it around pretty well.
Sony...lots of black...all mirrorless and number one... a focused profit.
Nikon...whooboy...red red red.
The rest...very small markets. Eyes open always...
I care. Thanks for the posting.

Perception?
Just because it was the most popular means that it was the "supreme camera"?
I took it as simply the most sold.
Sony's marketing is far better than their cameras!
Good for Sony! I have no plans to change systems as mine perfectly meet my needs. Next topic.

Mainly, a Sony fan looking to rationalize their most recent purchase decision and the glory of being “part” of the popularity movement.
Finding quick graphics for 2021 or updated for 2022 isn't as easy this early in the 2022 calendar year. As recently as 2020, below, Canon's market share was bigger than Sony and Nikon combined. Sony is taking market share from everyone, but more so from Nikon than Canon. The 2021 full-frame mirrorless releases from all three may rejuggle their relative positions, but their overall positions are unlikely to substantially change, regardless of Sony's highly qualified(******) reporting of initial 2021 sales numbers.

And some people don't realize that market share, or popularity, doesn't mean it's the "best", simply the most popular.

What the larger UHH community seems to not understand is the decline of the camera market worldwide, a -80% decline in 11-years. The annotated chart below was lifted from a Nov 2021 analysis at
https://petapixel.com/2021/11/26/back-where-we-started-the-camera-industry-is-again-a-bit-part-player/The analysis shows the longer historical market (need) for cameras is around 5-million units per year, something Canon's CEO also said in 2021. Major new technology developments like compact 35mm film cameras or all new digital cameras can greatly expand the market, but only for a few years until numbers return to 'normal'.
In a declining market, that's where marketshare and relative size come into play, something that does not bode well for the smaller competitors fighting for any piece of a smaller and smaller pie.
We, on this forum, think of all of this as some sort of gear war. But it is a business war no different than Ford v Chevy v Toyota. Approached from that angle the discussions can be more relevant because the gear is all good. Better than most of us, at least me, can fully utilize. Business practices, marketing etc are not always successful. As they saying goes, amateurs talk tactics and soldiers talk logistics. Amateurs talk gear and photographers talk artistry.
