I'm archiving photos for both sides of my family - so far, I've scanned and processed about 500 negatives, 35mm slides, stereo slides and photos. Here are two that I took in 1960 using a small Canon that I bought from a friend for $25. These are not good photos, but I thought there might be some folks here who were in or near Camp Zama around that time and would enjoy seeing them. (These were colorized in PS).
"These are not good photos" You judge harshly, these photos record time fixed in a stopped clock. They tell us a lot more of life at that time than do the Neon glow of downtown Tokyo.
That 3 wheel delivery truck is very interesting and is sufficent.
Thanks for posting. Nice photos.
I was at NAF Atsugi, near Camp Zama, in 1976. Love Japan.
(But Thailand is much, much cheaper!) 😁
Nicely done, thanks for posting.

I was homebased at Kami-Seya 53-55. Purchased aZissIkon Contessa& and an Ikoflex at Atsugi. The Zama bus was one-of the ways to Yokohama
Thanks for sharing these. Not only do they show Japan in 1960 but also the advances in photography over a 60+ period of time.
Thanks everyone for your kind replies. We loved Japan also. Newly married, I didn't have a high enough rank to qualify for gov't quarters, so my wife & I lived "on the economy" as it was called then. Japan was very inexpensive in 1960: 360 yen/$. You could ride the trains for practically nothing. We visited Atsugi, Yokosuka and of course the giant BX at Tachikawa. Oddly, Japan was where I discovered Jazz. There were some terrific, hip jazz clubs in Yokohama.
Thanks so much for sharing a look back in time! You did quite nice job of colorization in the photos.

I bought a 3 year old Toyota for US$400 and drove! Was stationed at Atsugi for 18 months as the Aircraft Maintenance Officer. Great tour! 👍
Thank you FL Streetrodder.

Did it look like this? My father was part of the occupation force right after the war. He had a shoebox full of pictures like this in my closet. Professional photographers were selling them as souvenirs. I copied them way back in the 1970s simply by photographing them. I don't have access to the originals any longer, but the copies I made are decent enough. I think a few of his pictures were taken at Hiroshima, and there are a couple of MacArthur and scores of planes, ships and soldiers. If there is any interest, I can post more. By the way, he spent much of the war as a B17 mechanic stationed in Iowa before being shipped to Japan.
