I've been a PS user for years. My last version is 5.5. Recently, I bought a new desktop with Win11. My version of PS won't work on the new desktop. I tried downloading Gimp, but Win11 wouldn't let me run the install. I purchased a copy of PSE 2022 in hopes that its features would be enough for what I needed, but there are problems that I haven't sussed out yet.

Adobe has two subscriptions that include PS. One is the photography plan at $9.99 a month; the other, PS that's $20.99 a month. Is the PS that's part of the PS/LR photography plan the same PS as the PS only plan? I use PS for images and for creating posters for events.

I'd like to to regain some desk space and get rid of the old machine, but if I absolutely have to, I can keep it and sneakernet between the two.

Thank you,

I have the $9.95 plan, I get free upgrades, photoshop is the same in both plans.

A "perpetual" license for software that stops working because no longer supported on current operating systems might be cheaper (though not routinely updated) but is hardly perpetual!

The ownership is perpetual and functioning on the systems the software was designed to function with is perpetual.

The license doesn’t specify perpetual support to unilateral changes the user makes.

I'm not a PS user (I only teach it) and so the last time I paid for PS was back in 2012 when I bought a copy of CS6 for I believe about $150.00. It's installed on this laptop right now and works fine. Let's compare total costs:

CS6 for ten years on this laptop still working total cost = $150.00.
Adobe LR/PS subscription for ten years total cost = $1198.80

So where can the OP buy a copy of CS6 for $150 that will run on his computer running Win11?

An alternative reality or different universe than our own.

The OP can't and of course I didn't suggest that she could. If she wants to continue using PS and can't get her old CS 5.5 version to work on her new computer then her best option is to buy into the Adobe subscription plan.

I posted that difference between license versus subscription versions in response to another poster to illustrate a difference between using the two different models. The OP we can assume is aware of that difference as she has been using an 11 year old license version of PS that we can also assume adequately served her purpose.

Unless you bought a used or illegal copy of CS6, there's no way you paid only 150 bucks. Cs6 was over $600 when it came out. That makes your whole argument fall apart.

Not being a Win11 user I don't know why it wouldn't let you use GIMP. I would try again and see if you can find a way. There are forums specific to various programs such as GIMP and they may have an answer.

There is a definite difference between the UI for GIMP and PS that will take some getting used to. I went the other way: GIMP user for a couple years, then switched to PS (GIMP didn't do some things I wanted to do and PS did them).

OTOH, if your budget allows, the $9.99/month (plus sales tax) Adobe program will let you use PS (which you are used to, although there will probably be some differences between 5.5 and the current version). And it gives you Lightroom, which gives you Digital Asset Management as well as light editing (although they have been adding PS-like features recently). LR gets mixed reviews from people. Those who are not comfortable with database operation will be uncomfortable with LR, but those who get to like LR really like it.

The $9.99/month program will give you what you need now. If you don't care for the Adobe program you can drop it and go to something else. GIMP may well work its way into Win11 soon, since it's a popular program and I can't believe it would be forever unavailable on Win11.

I bought an academic version of CS6 (college faculty) which I believe at the time was $149.00 but ten years ago is a long time and I won't swear to that -- could have been $199.00 which really doesn't change the point.

I love having the $10/month for PS, LR and Bridge. Always up to date, and amazing new capabilities. $10/month, I spend at least $10/week for coffee.

Same here. I am sure that Photoshop 2022 is light years better than CS 5

Wow, I also am still running Ps CS6 CS6 Extended 64-bit that I bought a few months before Adobe went subscription and cloud. I have the source program DVD-ROM disk I bought directly from Adobe on a student price at the time. I was attending an adult ed photo school back then. I currently have that program running on my Windows 10 Dell XPS tower. I may want to soon move to the subscription version of Ps as it has been improved, especially in its content aware features. I just started doing large focus stacks and Ps baulks at them even with 32GB of RAM. I also just found that Zerene does much better at stacking. I am concerned about compatibility with Windows 11. I may opt for another computer with Windows 11 and keep my older one running Win 11 and CS6 for now.

Latest version of GIMP installs and runs fine on my Win 11 system for what it's worth, but if you really need a raster editor like PS and don't want to purchase the Adobe subscription, Affinity Photo is the best alternative.

That’s a total misrepresentation. Photoshop CS6 was $700, NOT $150. And that’s just Photoshop which I use on maybe 10% of my photos. The subscription also includes Lightroom, which I use for 100% of my photos, and Portfolio, which gives me up to 5 websites.
