Longshadow, Thanks for your perspective.
cahale, Might work in Texas but suspect you could have a serious problem in several other states.
jim quist, Thanks for your response. I left my expensive camera in the motel safe when we were in D.C. and were riding the subway. I missed some excellent pics but my gear was secure.
My car was broken into at the G Gate bridge last Sept . Back pack was to large to get out the window . JUST DON'T GO TO S, FRAN. Or maybe Ca. anymore .
TomHackett, Your suggestion for buying an Inland insurance policy is a good one.

nimbushopper, Sounds like you have visited some of the larger cities in California. How long until CA demands the Federal Tax Payers pay for their extremes?
I lived in San Francisco for two years! Been to all of the large CA cities. Much too liberal for me to live there, but as a photographer it's a target rich environment.

Don't give them any ideas, they do enough damage already, without being given more ideas!
I never had a problem in Asia, Europe or the Mid East but I have my straps all have cables in them. I got them a B&H they are about $25.00 each.
Don't remember but, I asked the sales guy on the B&H phone line. Got one for my camera and one for my side caring bag. I told him what I wanted, and he just gave the price and I said one for each.
Years ago I bought an alarm device about the size of a cell phone. When it was armed and placed in your camera bag it would make an extremely loud noise if anyone picked up the bag. Very handy when doing a shoot if you got busy with the subject and someone tried to lift your stuff! Only problem was if you forgot to disarm it you would bring a lot of attention to yourself.
I had over $3500 of equipment stolen from my locked trunk about 2 years ago. The thieves saw me put the equipment in the trunk in a beach parking lot then followed me to my in-laws’ house where they stole the equipment while I was in the house having dinner. Homeowners insurance covered most of the loss, but while waiting for the money I bought a large Pelican case which is double locked and cabled in my trunk through the car’s frame so it can’t be yanked from the trunk. So far, so good.
Perhaps the question should be: "How paranoid are you?"

Here is a reminder for UHH members thinking about photographing in major cities…especially on the West Coast.
https://petapixel.com/2022/02/19/dangerous-places-in-san-francisco-for-photographers-and-cameras/ I think a special mental note deserves attention when staying at motels and hotels and leaving equipment in the vehicle. Also, makes one wonder how secure many of the paid parking garages are for gear. Many vans don’t have trunks. I never carry my camera with a major camera ID neck strap when walking around. Of course, thieves can spot pro level gear from a distance. It ain’t Disneyland out there.

I never put my camera equipment away at the place I park. You must stop at a place and load your equipment in your car and drive away to a different place to park and get out of your car. That does not mean load you stuff and pull a few yards. I load my stuff at a mile of so away for the spot I park. If I put me camera stuff or any expensive thing in my car I don't walk away, I move the car a good distance.
