Day Light savings coming soon

Welcome to Indiana. The entire state is one time, except for some northwest and some southwest counties. Our gutless state idiots decided to let each county decide what time zone they wanted rather than the entire state in one zone. There were a couple that went Central then decided to go back to Eastern.

Well, my state legislature (the Peoples Republic of Maryland) has introduced a bill to eliminate the “ritual” and keep the time on day light savings. Not sure if a new time name is included in the bill. The legislature is mostly Democratic while the Governor is Republican. I have not read or heard of reasons for the change. Or whether the Governor will have reason to veto the bill. Of course, the legislature could override the veto. May depend on whether there are any lobby interests to keep the status quo.
I am trying to imagine experiencing the day light schedule in winter.
Comments are welcome.

Why not split the difference and make 8:30 9:00 and make the change universal all across the US. I bet if we did that in the US, the rest of the world would see how this makes sense and follow along. No more adjusting the clocks and watches twice a year.

I think the USA is too big east to west to not have several time zones. Although you could do as China does and impose one zone on the country where really it probably should have 4 or 5

With one time zone for the whole country, someone in the east coast will work, lets say, 9-5, but in CA they'll work 6-2???

From 1986-2006, Indiana was one of the few (I think 3 at the time) states that did not observe Daylight Savings Time except a few counties around Chicago and Louisville. Being at the "late" side of the Eastern Time Zone (Solar Noon at approx. 12:45), Eastern Daylight Savings gives us sunsets after 9 p.m. When the time changes in March, kids who were going out to school buses with a 7 a.m sunrise are suddenly plunged back into the dark with sunrise at 8 a.m. The sun doesn't rise at 5:30 a.m. in the summer either. Not changing clocks was an advantage. Deciding whether you were on Eastern or Central time twice a year was a disadvantage. We did get to have our own computer time zone, though.

I do think that continuity between states is important. That said, having experienced both systems, I and many others I know are opposed to Daylight Savings Time period. Again, being on the trailing edge of a time zone influences that attitude. We can be too late in the Eastern Zone and too early in the Central Zone. Our location worked well for most of the year.

That is correct. That is why people in western China often go by an unofficial time which is 2 hrs different to the official one.

Personally, I think the world should cooperate and meet in the middle, then stay there. Instead of arguing whether or not it is better in one choice or the other just compromise and never have to change it again, anywhere.

DST is one of the stupidest ideas ever invented. When proponents yammer on about "the extra hour of daylight", I always reply that it is no wonder we have global warming, with an extra hour of solar warming. What we really need is to set the clocks back in the spring to get an extra hour of darkness, to let the planet cool down. Whenever I say that, people look at me like I am crazy. They like DST and they think I am crazy?

You can debate the good and bad as much as you want however the bottom-line is daylight savings time is good for physical, mental and family health. People spending more time outside after work sitting on a dock walking a path riding a bike or spending time outside with their families is a good thing.

That is a total crock. You can do all of those things regardless of what time the clock says. If your work hours do not allow that, change your work schedule.

I think that an argument for using time zones aligned with the longitudes, the 4 (5) time zones across the USA for example, to be workable. It does make it easier to have the clock adjusted accordingly. It allows easy correlation across the country when it does come to time schedules.

I have had no problems with the time changes. I automatically adjusted along with little to no difficulty. I liked the change in that it did make it safer for my children at the time getting to school. As for my business, I kept my travels so that I could call on account for another hour when crossing the boundary.

Now that's a crock, tell the stock markets and businesses around the world they need to work on your schedule.

So in effect they created their own time zone.
