Wrigleyville in Snow by Paul Sager, on Flickr

This collection of images all come from an EOS 1v, the EF 35mm f/1.4L USM and fresh and expired rolls of film.

Snow Day Jan 2021

The 35L is a popular prime lens for photojournalism, street photography and weddings. The focal length does not distort as much as other wider offerings. The large aperture is good for dim light, and the low distortion is good for group portraits.

The scanned JPEGs were processed further in Adobe Lightroom 6. Specific details are available from the Flickr host pages via the URL links that are the title of each image.

"Sweet-Swinging" Billy Williams played 18 seasons in the MLB with a career .290 batting average and 426 home runs. Williams was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1987. His uniform number 26 is retired by the Cubs.

Thank you Sarantis! Over the past few winters I've been experimenting mostly with B&W film. As much as I make fun of film / film shooters, I actually admin a film section at: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/s-136-1.html

Thank you ELNikkor, William, John, Sarantis, Dennis, Ben, Gerry, Bruce, Iron Sight! Last year I was experimenting with expired B&W and testing how much / little to adjust the ISO in the camera to override the DX code. This winter, I guess appearing next winter, I've been working with a yellow filter. Glad you enjoyed.

Excellent Paul. Question: do you often use the 35 f1.4L wide open? I’m trying to decide between it and the 35 f2.

Thanks Chris! I shoot hardly any of my lenses wide-open, even the ones that are great wide-open. That said, I made a purposeful effort to shoot wider / wide-open on my last Thanksgiving trip. I'm still editing / evaluating the results and considering what I learned and / or proved from that investigation.

Regarding the 35L, wide (aperture) for me on this lens is f/2, that seems to balance a useful depth of field on a close subject that is separated from an out of focus background. LR says I have one image from all of 2021 at f/1.4 for this lens. It's the second to last image in this post, the close-up of the ceramic picture on the grave stone: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-726632-1.html

Showing f/2 in action, all but the final image in this set shows what I mean. And, the final image is f/2.2: https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-674465-1.html
