The ice age.

Back in the day when the ice melted it left a lot of these large rocks in our town.
Nice pictures Hal.

Nice set, Hal. I bet the farmers hated those.
See what all that global warming has done? Had there been no warming, those rocks would be stuck in ice several miles thick. And you wouldn’t be around to photograph them. And you wouldn’t be needing a camera, which would trickle down economically, throwing the world economy into havoc. Al Gore, take that!

In Maine there are mountains whose bald tops have large boulders sitting on them. Most people don't think about it, but if you didn't know about the ice age, you might wonder just how those boulders got up there! The glaciers left the barrens where the wild blueberries grow - in the past these were all dotted with large boulders. That was no problem when the berries were raked by hand, but the majority are now raked with mechanical harvesters which require the fields to be cleared of boulders. In the area of "Downeast Maine" famous for the blueberries, there are neat geological features caused by glaciers: moraines, terminal moraines, kettles, etc. People who own land where there is a terminal moraine make some money by creating a gravel pit and selling gravel. Probably most don't appreciate the glacial origins of their ridge of land.
Is there an explanation why the rocks are grouped rather than spread about? Frank
Thanks a lot Frank, that’s going to keep me awake tonight...

Let me know if your nocturnal cogitation produces a theory. Thanks. Frank
Usually it just makes me have to pee at 3 am.
I tell people that I never get up at night and I pee every morning at 7 am. The problem is sometimes I don’t get out of bed till 9.
