And, if no one purchases new camera bodies or lenses, then in a short time there will be no new bodies or lenses to buy.

At the end of the day ... It's a question of Needs and Wants ..

What you spent and what you spent it on is your’s and your’s alone. What I find really interesting and yes comical is when people who just purchased the latest technology ask the most basic questions about photography. What gives? HILARIOUS

Listen Up- there is NO Shame in upgrading your camera equipment even if only for GAS! If you want it and you can afford it then go for it. You don't need anyone's permission here to do that. You don't need anyone here setting limits on what you buy or how often you buy or if you should buy. If you have a closet full of unused equipment that is your business.

Will it make you a better photographer? Maybe or maybe not. But it will be fun to find out. New equipment will often push you forward to becoming better by the technical advances. It may help you see improvement which may be the catalyst for more improvement.

Why is it there is honor in using outdated equipment? It is often said here that my (really old) equipment works just fine. Well that's fine for you but don't use it as a measure of why someone else should not buy new.

It use to be fun here seeing members say "The Brown Truck is coming and then it fell out of favor followed by other members denigrating the purchase of new equipment. (yes- I have been on this forum for a long time) Why- why taint new equipment purchase with underlying negative judgement? There are real advances in new cameras now that can achieve results that older cameras can't- ISO improvement, focus, reduced size and weight, focus stacking, interval and video results and many other advances.

So let's not treat our members as children but as thinking adults. We should be responding to the implied question of what did you gain by updating not should I update. And GAS is ok.

What I don't understand about people on this forum is why ask strangers, people you have no idea about as far as their skills and abilities go, what you should buy? I would think that's a great question to ask very specific people that you know have the knowledge to help you and perhaps reading reviews, of which there are many across the web, is also a good way to learn about equipment. Then, why are people so darn compelled to tell everyone they got something new? Is it bragging? A silent plea for help? Why not just get out there and take some great images with it and maybe post those with the specs? It appears that some people just have a great need to "share" with others and that means you'll get a variety of comments, maybe even some negative ones if someone is jealous that you can afford something they want but can't afford. From a personal perspective I would not be comfortable telling the world what I can and cannot afford and sometimes when people do that it does sound like bragging and then maybe it is. Often if a header has anything about new equipment I just pass it by...yours said, "rant" and I was curious. Maybe people just don't have anything better to do with their time than to talk about equipment.

First, agree, agree, agree.

Second, Like others, I am never going to shoot masterpieces, unless maybe astro or special stuff. But I take photos on trips and hate carrying lots of stuff. For most of my life, I rarely carried anything except for special events like shooting cave formations in low light using film. So carrying two cameras and lens got old real fast on plant tours, we climb up hill sides, etc. to often find the plants. So I got the Canon SX cameras for wide range, based on watching and talking with fellow travels. So for me, while masterpiecing would be nice, versalitity is tops.

Third, I think a lot of good photographers really know way more about cameras than I will ever know, so statements like you can do all that with manual settings, assuming you have the dexitery, knowledge, etc., on a 15 yr old camera while informative and interesting are not as important as how much of that can be done simplier on a new model, of course with $$$$$. For example, the latest review of tracking functiins on a Z9 were of real interest to me.

My point, some of us want/need to fill a need, which others can do already after years of experience, but we want it the easy way. That's my right, just it is anyone else's to try to find that exact wording needed in a small print, virtually unidexed manual, if there is one you don't have to print out first. I really enjoy all the info, but demeaning someone is just a trip by a fragile ego.

We all have our own priorities and asking others for advice on this forum is like asking whether to buy another pair of shoes. If you don't know then don't buy. I don't discuss my priorities with anyone except my wife. IMHO, such public discussions are childish. That's my rant!

We are just having a fun discussion here. You need to lighten up.

I usually don't buy new cameras unless they will do something I need/want that the current one won't.

CHG CANNON has always been very consistent on this point and I agree with him and with suntouched. CHG CANNON responds to the question of GAS with technically correct analysis which may or may not be what the question is about but it useful information in making a decision. The only factor I would add is that I have "upgraded" several times (over a 60 year period) and have found that new equipment, even if it does not meaningfully improve my capabilities or results, does created new and added enthusiasm for the hobby. The result, of course is, now my wife and I are sifting through 50,000 photos (digital, slides and prints) to save our offspring from the task and to identify the people in the pictures where possible. I currently have a D-850 and love it but, if someone gave me $25,000 to upgrade and shift all my gear to a Z9, it would be fun and give me new challenges. In the meantime, I'll stick with the D-850 which, as many have noted, has more capabilities than I will ever use.

You're right. If you can afford another $3000 camera when you already own a $3000 camera that isn't anywhere near 'old' nor 'outdated', there's no reason to ask strangers on the internet for permission to spend your money on unneeded items. Most $3000 cameras are designed to last 10+ years, if not forever.

But, if you know in your heart you're not making a wise choice given your photography needs and personal financial situation, maybe that fear exhibits itself in needing to ask strangers on the internet what they think about the idea. And some strangers might give a candid response to your question, helping you make your own 'right' decision. Others, of course, will happily spend your money as if their own, their 'right' decision that may / may not apply to you.

I've never understood why it is that some members feel a need to seek permission from the community before making a major camera or lens purchase.
