Listen Up- there is NO Shame in upgrading your camera equipment even if only for GAS! If you want it and you can afford it then go for it. You don't need anyone's permission here to do that. You don't need anyone here setting limits on what you buy or how often you buy or if you should buy. If you have a closet full of unused equipment that is your business.
Will it make you a better photographer? Maybe or maybe not. But it will be fun to find out. New equipment will often push you forward to becoming better by the technical advances. It may help you see improvement which may be the catalyst for more improvement.
Why is it there is honor in using outdated equipment? It is often said here that my (really old) equipment works just fine. Well that's fine for you but don't use it as a measure of why someone else should not buy new.
It use to be fun here seeing members say "The Brown Truck is coming and then it fell out of favor followed by other members denigrating the purchase of new equipment. (yes- I have been on this forum for a long time) Why- why taint new equipment purchase with underlying negative judgement? There are real advances in new cameras now that can achieve results that older cameras can't- ISO improvement, focus, reduced size and weight, focus stacking, interval and video results and many other advances.
So let's not treat our members as children but as thinking adults. We should be responding to the implied question of what did you gain by updating not should I update. And GAS is ok.

That's timely! Enjoy and let us know how it works out for you.
Why waste your money on a new camera when there is ample saltwater fishing gear to buy? The point is, we all do what we can and what gives us some enjoyment. If a new camera is it, then do it! But if you need to ask peoples’ advice then you are asking for a wide variety of responses and have no room to call it a rant. I would have no enjoyment from buying a new Nikon Z9. But would enjoy spending that money to go fishing for 3 weeks or flying business class to Kenya to tour. Personal preferences! Just don’t tell my wife.

I love it. I drive a 12-year-old Prius. It is paid for and in great shape. Would I enjoy a new car? Sure. Do I need one or want one? No. I do spend money on the few things I need and want and that matters.
I don't gamble. But if I hit the lottery tomorrow, after paying Uncle Sam, donating half of what's left to charity, and paying all our outstanding family debts, I'd consider shopping the new car lots. But I wouldn't be in a hurry. I'd go visit the nearest town with big camera stores for a day or two, book a cruise, and travel to see family! And tell my wife to retire...

Whenever I yearn for a more exotic car, I just throw the old bus into the computer and fantasize. It does have rather nice lines!
As for modern state of the art equipment, I’m darned glad the surgeon that performed open heart surgery on me two months ago had access to the most modern stuff around.
There’s nothing wrong with buying something new for yourself and you’re own reasons. Buying something new in an attempt to impress others or make you appear important is all the wrong reasons.
I agree that it's a personal choice .
Though worth considering the wider picture .
If people keep buying ' the latest gear ' at a cost that would have bought you a house in the 1950's ..
Then Camera makers will keep out dating their 'products ' every 18 months .
But if people slowed down a bit then the makers may stop taking us for fools ..
When one thinks of the outstanding film cameras of the 1970's .. OM1 etc etc which are still going strong today
New models were very slow to come out , while the previous model was still available new .
Sure , yes , there are improvements ... but how far can one go , for that perfect picture .
I had a D200 which I thought was brilliant ... Then I got a 300s .. the difference in picture quality ( at raw )
was 500% better , so yes much was gained ... but I'm not sure if I can improve further , so will stick
with the 300s for now ..
I am thinking of getting a professional MFT camera , but not for better quality but for the small unit which will come in handy at certain times , be more discreet and not attract attention , etc etc ..But even there its a minefield on what one to choose ... after spending lots of time doing re search , the decision was that the Lumix D80 was the one to get ... but on inquiring at shops , was told that its ' discontinued ' GRRR ..
I have always said "a hobby is to consume excess cash". The biggest issue may be buyers remorse.
That should read G80 Lumix

A hobby is to consume excess time, but marketing has taken advantage of the time=money relationship.
