The red skin on the crane's forehead (also called crown) shows the level of excitement or arousal.
In the top photo, the crane is quite agitated and the crown (reddish skin studded with very tiny black feathers) is pulled back and expanded. Thus the head looks angular.
In the bottom photo, the crane is more relaxed and the area of red skin is smaller.
That's interesting. I asked my daughter-in-law about it and she didn't know anything about it. I thought she would because my wife is always saying she's such a bird-brain.
