This tree grows in south Texas and Mexico. It blooms every time it rains and the blooms are fragrant. While the tree is very thorny and not too popular with people, bees love it. It produces a seed pod that is about six to eight inches in length that are very woody. The heartwood is deep maroon but not truly black as the name would imply; however, it is the only exotic wood grown in America. Due to its slow growth and gnarly shape, it is not grown commercially.

Beautiful set and excellent narration, Dan! Those pods remind me of all those darn mesquite pods I had to rake up as a kid in Texas.

Beautiful shots and great documentation, Dan. It won't be too long before they are blooming again.
