Hi Camera enthusiasts out there,

After waiting a year, I finally bought a Canon R5 and a Canon r lens 100-500. I was thrilled! I was in Camera heaven! I did a basketball shoot, I was really happy. Now I'm taking it out to the wetlands for bird photography, and it's dramatically overheating. The firmware is 1.4.0. Do I call Canon and send it back, or is it a software problem? What are your thoughts?

Does it overheat taking photographs or videos or a combination of both?

Call Canon, and get an accurate temperature.

When you say overheating, do you mean it stops functioning or does the camera just feel hot? I have two of them and take thousands of picture at weddings and other events and have never had an overheating issue. I would call Canon for support on this if it is truly overheating.

I would definitely call Canon support. They have been very good in my experience.

I recently saw Chef Jean Pierre use one of these thermometers on Youtube to determine when his saute pan was 350 degrees. What a great kitchen tool it is!

I would try to reset the camera and see if something was turned on what causes the camera to run something in the background.

The ones from thermoworks are very accurate and Chef Jean Pierre is my favourite chef, duck breast anyone?

Thanks. It stops working and really overheats. It took over an hour for it to cool off. I'll listen to you all and call Canon

I have an R5 and have never had that happen. You should upgrade the firmware to the latest version 1.5.0 and that may help.

I don't have one (yet). But my research said that overheating was a problem with earlier versions. They "fixed" it with a firmware upgrade.

I have had an R5 for almost 1 1/2 years. This is not normal. A freeze once in a while is normal(for some unknown reason).Overheating on stills is not. I would try to return as defective and get a new body.

I've only had my R5 for a week, but have probably taken over a thousand shots, including using hi speed drive mode. So far I have not had any issues.

I switched to the low speed drive mode because I was creating far to many pictures to sort out. Are you using exposure or focus bracketing in any combination with high speed drive mode? Are you creating thousands of picture per day or even hour (easy to do)?

Are you using a Compact Flash Memory card or an SD card? I've only used my SD cards but have heard the CF cards get hot quickly.

If it's none of that, definitely call Canon's excellent service line - they will definitely help you sort it out.
