I am trying to decide between the Nikon D850, which I have ordered and the newest mirrorless. I have the Nikon D700, Nikon D7200 and Nikon D500. I mainly shoot wildlife and have the lens that fit these cameras. I have a lot o nice lens Nikon 200-500 among the one that I used the most. I have researched both cameras, but would like some wisdom from all of you. This will probably be my last camera as I am 70. Thanks you

Welcome to UHH. If I were you I think that I would go into the Mirrorless lineup. I’m not telling you to plop down 6 grand for the Z9, but look into the Z711.

I have 2 D850 bodies. It is an exceptionally good camera. I have used 20+ years old Nikon lenses and have never had any problems. The images were sharp, color great, and fast auto-focus. The lenses I used most shooting football were the Nikon 400 f2.8 and the Nikon 80-200 f 2.8. Never a problem when used on the D850.

I have Nikon D850-no better camera...recently bought Nikon Z 50 as backcountry hiking camera and travel camera for its lightness and easy packing; no longer making large metal prints and love the combo. Also have new iPhone 13 and amazed at its abilities and practice nature and ease of editing. I am also in my 70's...

Hi Linda

I just made the transition from a D5 & D810 to a Z9. It will do all that an 850 will do and more. I still have some of my DSLR lenses I use with it by utilization of a FTZII adapter including f2.8 28-70mm, & f2.8 70-200mm, and my f5.6 200-500mm to list a few. My D5 & D810 have been gone almost a month and I am completely satisfied with my Z9 and the picture results. I have been recently using it for sports. Mostly basketball however, I'm getting ready to move on to Baseball, Volleyball and some Landscape and Real Estate photography. I will recommend the Z9 hands down to any other Nikon Camera. Good luck with your camera selection. BTW I'm 76 and am loving the new technology

That's too funny. I am 73 and they haven't yet designed my last camera. 😁

I was going to point that out. The negative I read about is that the focus tracking of the Z7ii hasn't quite caught up to the D850, but it appears that they're working on it.

That is a consideration, but there are other considerations to balance it. I personally would never go back to dslr. The EVF, for instance, is extremely valuable in low light situations, and for checking highlight blowout, two things that are common issues shooting wildlife. The Z series is the future for Nikon, and most if not all of their future lens technology will go into Z lenses. The Z mount makes possible improved lens designs impossible with F mount. For me this far outweighs the few old body driven AF lenses one might still have kicking around when considering a major new body purchase.

A very good Sunday Linda,

Please don't say your recent purchase (D850!) will likely be your last camera purchase. You stated your age as 70 - but I have a really strong feeling you are a VERY young 70. I am 72 and purchased my D850 (really love this one!) and added the Nikon P1000 only a few months ago. I plan to keep adding to my equipment in the coming few years as I need. If I purchase the Nikon Z9 and "kick the bucket" (at 72 I feel I can use that wonderful old phrase) the very next day sobeit. Someone will receive some very nice gear when (not if!) that occurs.
I don't know just how much you know about the P1000 but if you do any or much wildlife work you would love this machine. There is nothing like it currently being sold. The lens contains 17 elements resulting in a lens that magnifies to 125X and zooms out to the equivalent of 3000mm !! The images I take are really incredibly sharp and as I am a "sharpness addict", anal retentive and, I know, also obsessive / compulsive (I think these are all simply the price we pay living in todays world) focus is paramount. No, I am not a Nikon salesman it's just that I have never been so impressed with a camera - except the D850.
Of course, whether you purchase additional cameras / equipment in the future or not is your choice but please don't limit yourself and I really think you should give the P1000 a look-see. I know you'd be impressed.

All the very best to you and yours,

Terry

I'm in the same age bracket as U - use the Nikon d850 for mostly everything except street I have a Fujifilm x-pro3 for that . I think the d850 is the most versatile Dslr out , with its high megaplex count to the build like a tank is very well suited for outdoor photography & portraiture

The D850 will about double the pixel resolution of highest current camera in your current list. Do you have the computer storage and processing for these larger files? Do you have exceptional FX lenses, should that higher pixel resolution expose issues in your FX lenses? Your lenses that 'look great' on the 12MP D700 may not be so great on the 45MP images coming out of the D850. Have you handled a D850, a larger physical camera as well as producing larger files?

Have you considered the duplication of your D7200 and D500, both cropped-sensor (DX) bodies?

Have you considered the D750/D780 that present 24MP full-frame sensors, more consistent with the 24MP and 20MP resolution of the two DX bodies? Given you can crop an image about the same pixel size as the output of the D850, have you considered the need of any DX bodies with a 45MP full-frame camera?

Have you considered renting a D850 for a week of confirmation before ordering a $3000 camera and not considering the many questions such as above? Have you considered a mirrorless rental for the same hands-on investigation?
The D850 will about double the pixel resolution of... (show quote)

Been away for a while. Glad to come back and see you're still giving really good responses. Thanks.

My favorite motorcycle is a 38 year old obsolete Japanese brand that I have to carry spare parts for because they’re impossible to find on the road. But I ride it all over the US and Canada. Why? It does what I want of it, I like it and it feels “right.” Look at cameras and spouses the same way. What I like is unimportant to you.
