The 59 Chevy actually had recorded handling stability problems associated with the fin under certain condition. No surprise to anyone that it was one of the few years that the 59 Ford outsold Chevy that year.

We had two 59 Chevys . . . my brother's Bel Air Sport Coupe and my Biscayne two-door sedan. Drove the Biscayne seems like a couple of hundred thousand miles (it was probably 85,000), often running 85-90, down the Texas highways and never did encounter a stability issue that I can remember.
My Biscayne was a 3-speed V8. Boy did I love that car. I sold it for $500 when I went in the Peace Corps. Sure do wish I had kept it. Sure thought it was a pretty card. My all-time favorite Chevy when it came to looks was the 59.
When they first opened a second of I-35 north of Fort Worth i raced a guy for more than 20 miles. Boy was that fun. Would have really got on my boys for doing such a stunt,

My first lengthy experiences with brand new cars was with the '59-'60 Buicks. Truly awesome automobiles!

Yes! I remember an ad that talked about the fins on a car and ended with the declaration that the car was "very finny looking."

If HHH were to give awards for the favorite postings of 2022 I would be voting for this series of old cars. Thanks for doing it.

Had a 59 Chevy. At 75 mph it gave up. Afterwards, I bought a Ford.
