Congrats. There are no BestBuys near me now, but when I lived near one it seemed they never had what I wanted in stock, no matter how big or small.

Thank you. I realize it was pure luck. After checking around in several stores I made a last attempt, albeit with little hope, at BestBuy. As I said in my post, they found one somewhere in their chain. Can't wait to take delivery.

Actually the harddrive in question was considerably wider and thicker, 1"+ at edge and thicker at center. All data had to be contiguous, squeeze program did this to put all empty space into one continuous area. Bad memory once sqooze my data, really bad! Computer was like in movies, 6 ft by 4 ft by 18" deep, very impressive by sloooooooooow.

It sounds like a computer that was before pc’s. what brand is it. I might have worked on one like it. I worked on industrial computers and pc’s from the 80’s to the early 2000’s for the usps. I started out with pdp 8 up to pdp 11’s and other processors.I worked on the first ethernet that would take 3.5 hours to download 100 megs of data. It was called thick net . It’s speed was 10 Mb/sec. Now you can get anywhere from 100 to 1 gb speed. Things have really changed!

Yeah, even a lowly $900 Late 2020 M1 MacBook Air has two independently controlled 40 Gbps USB4/Thunderbolt 3 ports on it. It will connect to the fastest conventional networks around and they'll be the bottlenecks.

When I was a college student in 1974, taking a computers and statistics class, we had an NCR Century 100, with 64 MEGAbytes of core memory in it. Doubling that cost more than a very large house. We've come so far with technology, it's embarrassing. Now, if human nature would just catch up...

DEC PDP 11-34 comes to mind. Used for stepwise regression of spectral datafiles in visble-near-infrared (400-2498 nm) against Agricultural product composition. Replaced by Microvax which in some ways I still like better than any PC operating system I have ever used since. I believe DEC was bought by Compaq, both of which went???

[quote=revhen]One of our knowledgeable participants here recommended this printer for many good reasons. Nobody has it for sale except at nearly double the standard price. I guess the strangled supply chain has not let more into our country. Any ideas?[/quote

Put yourself on B&H’ waiting list. When a shipment arrives, everyone on the list will get an email. Then it becomes first come first served. I think I received 5-6 such notices before I was quick enough to get the ET-8500. I’ve been back on the list to try for another for my grandson. Once again, I’m waiting.

We would love to read your impressions of its performance after you get it going!

EPSON ET-8550 Printer arrived without a hitch. Installation was slow but probably internet related. For some reason it took half forever to download the printer and scanner drivers plus a few optional things. It will take a few weeks to fully assess all available features and functions, plus the print quality with different paper sizes and finishes.
My first overall impression is very good with final judgment reserved.
