Interesting.
I thought it was a site for those interested in photography to display images, exchange technique, and converse.
Not solely for education in the art of photography.

Perception.

And to learn all we can. That's what I need.

I like that way of thinking!

Hi Rick. Have you ever posted any of your own pictures on this site?

Typical UHH lack of initiative. Why do you ask Rick ? Why don’t you just look at the public records ? Below is the only subject Rick has posted. Nothing embarrassing:

ROTFLMFAO

I could post a plagiarized Steiglitz and garner three pages about everything I’ve done wrong.

This is news to me. I believe you are wrong. Honest critiques are not restricted in this section.

Fully agree.

This site is inclusive of all photographers at all levels. As a result, a significant portion of the members lack experience and have relatively undeveloped photography skills. That includes how to get the best from their camera, the elements of good composition, an understanding of exposure, and how to use light. For some people, more experience will not result in significantly better photographs. They simply lack the eye for it.

The fact that some people post images they are proud of that may be subpar according to the standards of more experienced photographers is not an issue for me. Many people with good equipment believe that is all that is needed to take good photographs. They will either learn from experience over time or they will not. I don't view it as my job to criticize their work and force my views or opinions upon them unless they ask for it.

Mediocre images often get praise from equally inexperienced photographers . That is a side effect of the inclusiveness of this site. I try to provide helpful criticism when it is requested and ignore what I perceive as poorly crafted images when it is not.

I think I am an example of at least some photographers. I do photography because I enjoy it. I enjoy recording examples of nature that to me are interesting or beautiful or both. I also enjoy using photo equipment. While I expect to improve over time, enjoyment trumps achievement for me. While I have not posted any pictures yet, when I do the motive will be to share what I think are some attractive scenes of nature. If you don’t agree that’s OK. I hope UGG is heterogenous enough that all of us don’t have to be acting like we are earning another degree.

It is my understanding that replies to posts in this section are expected to be not critical of an image and that criticisms of photos are restricted to the “Critique” section where posters solicit negative as well as positive comments. I understand the thinking that such a forum is designed to be a place to display work one is proud of and looking for ego stroking, but it troubles me that 3 pages of “great shots”, “ 👍s” and “well dones” in response to clearly inferior photos may do the poster more harm than good. I’m not talking about subjective analysis of a particular image. Rather I am referring to photos that are unintentionally out of focus, over sharpened to the point where the halos become the subject, unintentional skewed horizons, unintentional color shifts and other technical issues like a tree growing out of the subject’s head” that are NOT subjective. If a member posts a photo he/she is proud of looking for affirmation and experienced photographers clearly see that the image lacks sharpness, commenting “nice set” will not allow the poster to learn how to improve.

Again - I understand the desire to be supportive of such posters and the reluctance to say something “not nice” as my mother warned me not to do, but reinforcing demonstrably poor technique prevents a shooter from improving. I really don’t have a great solution for this problem, other than to say nothing in response to a post. Anyone else see this as a problem preventing growth in photography skills?

There are many skill levels.
I acknowledge a post positively of those who post in the gallery.
At least they are willing to post what they have done.
In fact I really like many of the "imperfect" posts for reasons outside of technical reasons.
So for those of us who love to take and share our efforts, though not perfect in other's eyes, I salute you and thank you for posting.
Please continue to do so.

Not noticed it at all. But I do look in on the 'For your Consideration' forum - and post there.

I generally feel that the replies are useful, from names that are writ large among the UHH fraternity, but are very considered and not afraid to criticise.

It's not really meant for a 'family' shot with a wonky horizon, you can criticise that in the gallery, but if, as the name implies, you are looking for a somebody else's 'consideration' this is the place to go.

You're right, I missed the one and only picture he posted on UHH since becoming a member in 2014. Good catch.

How about rather than "embarassing them" to the rest of their "admirers" that you ask the person to private message you for your opinion?????

I like the picture.

What's the matter with only posting one image so far?
Is it a membership requirement to post many pictures?
Is it a race?
He who posts the most pictures wins?

Best way. Then that they may let you know they aren't interested without any back-and-forth ensuing on the thread.

Does it matter?????
Is there a minimum picture posting requirement?
