I bought two light stands used for $20.00 and a 6'x6' roller blind from Home Dept. Useing two Spring Woodworking clamps to hold the roller blind to the lightstands. you have a pretty cheap backdrop. If you get a couple of spray cans of paint, you can get sky, grass, or what ever, to finish the background, or you can keep it white, like I have done.

The best value backdrops are available from any curtain shop.

Net curtains make great wedding backdrops, dark curtain linings or blackouts are good for portraits

Another way is to play with old lace curtains using a strong light thru them to create a background on an even coloured surface. I used this for a background, the couple getting married had next to no money. Couldnt afford the high dollar photos. in the days of film. The proffesional who developed the photos was blown away with the background effect. Used the photo as a window display as tho he had done it. Sometimes its not about the money. Use your mind, its the best equipment you have.

I can't see from the picture how you used your clamps to attach the roller. Details please.

I made these and they work fine as a backdrop stand and a spot light support. Easy to build and not too much $$$

Hi latoya,

You've already gotten several really good ideas so I won't repeat them. In addition to those ideas Lowe's, Home Depot and Harbor Freight are some of my favorite place to shot for photo equipment (and wood working equipment as well). Inexpensive plastic clamps are availabe there that are great for anchoring "stuff." AND you can drill a hole in them to accomodate a bolt the same size as your tripod bolt to use as adjustable camera/flash mounts. The clamps are also great to hold backgrounds when needed on light stands. I find for most situations that construction work lights/stands work for photography as well.

One last idea is silver/metal hard cases that are lined with foam: They are much less expensive than the equivalent from a photo shop and make really good camera or lens cases. Take care & ...

I have the frame for the backdrop and I just go to the fabric store when the material is on for 50% off and get a little over a metre and make my holes and I can make as may different backdrops out of material that I want.

I am a professional Photographer working in Las Vegas N.M. and run my business on a very low budget. Ask at all the motels in your area if they have any old king size sheets they will donate (most will if you tell them what you are using them for)and hang them up up on something and sray them with a background paint and then go back in with a darker color, I even create my own senics using house paints and a sprayer a damp sheet usually takes paint better. Buy 1/2 inch electrical conduit at a hardware store and put your conduit through the hem. Place a large binding clip from a office supply store on each end and remove the wire part of the binding clips.Your backrounds will roll up on the conduit easily and stay wrinkle free! search thrift stores for old projector stands and build a u shaped hook at the top for the conduit to rest on. Have lots more low budget ides just send me a P.M. Heres my web site so you can see some samples, 90% of my props or backgrounds are homemade. www.shutterbugpaintingphoto.com

Do a Google Search for a used copy of "Dean Collins book TINKERTUBES" from the 1980's. It is plans for lots of things for lighting that can be made from pvc tubing.
