Must be CRAPPY batteries. I have stored batteries in head lanterns that way for +4 years. Recently opened a flashlight from my trailer that was untouched for 8 years and the light still worked when I removed the card.

I had that too. And the leaked batteries are relatively recent. I think what's Larrypage said has something to do with it.

I don't have to worry about the long-term storage of battery-operated gear because I use all my gear every day. All if need to concern me with is daily Marianne and charge procedures.

If you do store cameras or flash gear for long dormant periods, don't be lazy and take out the batteries. There is no sense in continually bickering about tricks and tips on keeping the batteries in the equipment when the gear is out of service. Even the best name brand batteries can swell, spring a leak, and cause serious damage. You can't dip your camera or Speedlight in a baking soda solution. In some gear, the contacts in the battery compare are not even easily accessible for routine cleaning, let alone mopping up an unmitigated mess of battery guts. Even e an expensive tactical gear flashlight is not as costly as a camera. If you Copper Tops or Energizers hemorrhage in your flashlight it won't be as costly to replace or repair it as your cameras and speedlights.

If you're concerned about your camera losing its software, do not store them away. Keep them handy and shoot still life, portraits of your cat, or images of wildlife through your windows.

For longer term storage for batteries? (day to day/emergencies/disasters) I use the Battery Buddy ("As Seen On TV! But wait there's more..."). I actually picked up half a dozen of these and gave them as Christmas gifts to family. This sure beats keeping them in a drawer rolling around etc. Easy to see what you have and "reload" as needed. I rotate the stock frequently. It is a two sided clasped thermo plastic case.

NOW THAT IS COOL!!! and it beats the dickens out of mine- see attached picture! Truthfully, that is my "battery morgue" awaiting removal from the recycler. Again truthfully, my spare battery drawer does not look that much better. I am gonna buy a few of those just to encourage my neatnik and OCD side to swing in action. I actual like to keep things in order- my love wife keeps insisting! Gonna get me belated Chrstmis gift!

I use these in my camera bag (right-side up for fresh):

Excellent Mr. Shapiro! Glad I shared. My biggest concern has been seeing some of the 9volt batteries cross poles and heat up to point of fire. Love the recycle idea too. Cheers and Happy New Year.

I charge mine and put them in a plastic bag, not the camera...

I too fly R/C, sailplanes and some power. Storage charge as per your r/c batteries. Maybe I'll post a pic of my airforce.

Yes, please do.
I'm sure many besides myself would like to see your planes.

so are you saying we should keep our batteries on the charger at all times even between brief breaks of shoots or not keep them on the charger all the time?? Just would like a little more clarification.

We don't know to whom you are asking the question,
but I never leave them in the chargers when they are done charging.

Thanks for the info on Battery Buddy Daddy. I just now ordered one from Amazon.

I have a couple of Ego brand (lithium) battery operated tools (lawnmower and blower). Ego recommends storing batteries at 30% charge. In fact, they will self-discharge to that level after 30 days of inactivity.

All these devices that say store at XX% charge, do they have value indicators?

I use rechargeable AAA, AA, C, 18650 batteries. Store AA & AAA in pvc pipes with removable end caps. Haven't bought a disposable battery in years.
