My parents had a wood stove for heat in one room, so my father purchased a "cord" of wood from a local man. He had the wood delivered and stacked, after the delivery my father looked at the wood and he measured the wood stack,it was not a "cord"; 4'x4'x8'.He then contacted the state department of weights and measures, they inspected the stack and agreed, and asked how the wood was delivered, "in a pickup" was the reply. My father was then informed that a "cord" of wood will not fit in a pickup, so the seller of the wood was contacted by the state and informed of the shortage and enough wood to make up the shortage was delivered free of charge.

Oh yes it will!

A cord of oak would weigh about 3,800 lbs. if you estimate 25% air space between the individual pieces.

A cord is no longer a cord. Used to be that when a cord of wood was properly stacked you couldn't get a piece of paper in it because it was so tight. No longer. Now you are lucky to get ¾ of an actual cord.

And talking about pricing...you have a valid point about the cost of gas and expenses for the guy selling the wood, but remember he is buying groceries and paying utilities, etc., and all of those are going up up up. He has to make enough money to pay for all of those things.

Not true! That is not the way a free market works!
Entitlements have no place in a free economy.

Many years ago, I bought a load of logs. I forget how many cords, but they were dumped on the front lawn, and I cut and split them into firewood. I did that for two years, but then those loads were no longer available.

Yup, I used to do to the same thing- bought the equivalent of five cords in 20 ft. lengths which were, as you say, dumped in the yard. Rented a skid steer to move and stack the logs next to my wood shed where I cut to length and split. First two years, I hand split and it took two weekends... third year I rented a log splitter- did it all in a single weekend. Either way, I really enjoyed the whole process... I like the smell of fresh spruce and birch.
I'd considered getting a pellet stove but, didn't like the noise and really didn't like the idea of losing heat if there was no power... and, there's nothing like a wood stove.

And who can forget those exciting chimney fires!! They sound like a 747 taking off, and the flames coming out the top. Just like July 4th, except in the winter.

It's not an entitlement...and that is exactly how the free market works.

Whatever the market will hold price wise ...is the price.

If enough folks don't buy at 300...the price will go down...the free market in play.
Deciding how much others 'should' be charging...is the exact opposite.

Beware! There is such a thing as a “face cord”. 2’ x 4’ x 8’. A half cord.

Around here we call that a rick
I have a guy who will deliver and stack a rick for just $70.00.
I sell bbq from the house so I am a very good customer.
I'll go through a rick every few weeks just cooking.

So, you agree with me. The world does not owe you a living......The price of an item/service should be established by the market, not what it costs you to live like you would like.

We built or house using 2x6 walls, R31 (approx) roof, good double pane windows and doors and even R21 floors, plus lots of South facing glass and a "sun room" with an insulated slab and tile floor for thermal mass. We have two mini-split HVAC units, one ventless propane heater, and one King brand eco certified wood stove. On a sunny day at 30 degrees or above no heat is needed. The little propane fake log heater will heat the whole house but the wood stove is fun and will run you out of there. Also note: seasoned wood is much lighter to carry, burns great and gives off way more heat than green wood. Standing dead wood is my fav to cut and split and at age 74 I still enjoy using a wedge and a sledge.

What type wood do you use for your bbq?
What items do you sell? Do you do Mail orders?

I used to heat with wood in Maine. The wood guy had a truck that held about 4' x 4' x 8' of wood - thrown loosely into it. A cord is defined by law (in Maine and I am sure many other northern states) as 4' x 4' x 8' STACKED. I would get several truckloads - it would take me a week to get it all stacked. After I stacked my wood I would call the guy up and advise him that I was short, and he would stop by in a few days with more firewood to make up the difference. He knew that the state took this very seriously. I imagine the majority of folks didn't question the wood dealer on the volume delivered - unless you stack it you can't really tell. I am not sure how much money I saved in terms of cost per BTU, but I saved by the house cooling down at night until I got up around 3 AM to load up the stove. But the warmth of sitting near your stove when it is 5 below outside is worth the money and effort!

My best seller is my pork butt slow smoked for about 24 hours with a mix of hickory and peach.
I'm not able to do mail order due to the complexity of shipping food items.
Plus it's all I can do most times just to keep up with the demand locally.
I'm going to be running ribs for Valentine's day and I already have a hundred orders to fill.
I'm going to have to rent another smoker to go along with the two I have now.
Ribs take around 5-6 hours and both of my smokers put together can only handle 25 slabs for cooking but I'll be using one just for keeping it warm until pick up.

We're paying $225.00 per pick up load for firewood and heating an 8 room farm house with two loads (Two wood burners) We have an oil furnace but the cost would be over $800.00 a month since the price of oil is over $3.50 a gallon. We do not have access to natural gas and propane is out of the question.
I don't know what AOC uses to heat her apartment but I want some of that.

She just talks a lot (she's full of hot air!)

Nothing feels quite as warm as wood heat. I know, heat is heat, but a wood fire is somehow part of our collective past and warms more than just our body. A rocking chair, a good book, a snack and drink--Nirvana.
