I taught history/geography/government etc. in LA for 35 years.
Once while covering a math class during my conference period (math dept. was having an "urgent meeting") one of the students (he was also my student in US History) asked for help with a new type of problem that had been introduced while he was out 3 days with a mild case of the flu.
I grabbed a sheet of paper and did the problem in 4 steps like I had been taught. The boy said "That can't be right." He looked in the back of the book and found I had the right answer but then turned back to the current chapter and showed it to me.
That book took 11 steps to do what I had learned to do in 4. No wonder so many students had trouble and took so long to finish assignments. They had made a relatively short and simple process into a long convoluted formula for confusion.

A version of: “Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.” Attributed to Albert Einstein in Robert Byrne

Very true and it looks like stupidity is winning the race.

My husband and I went through the McDonald's driveway window and I gave the cashier a $5 bill.
Our total was $4.25, so I also handed her 25c.
She said, 'you gave me too much money.'
I said, 'Yes I know, but this way you can just give me a dollar back.'
She sighed and went to get the manager who asked me to repeat my request.
I did so, and he handed me back the 25c, and said 'We're sorry but we don’t do that kind of thing.'
The cashier then proceeded to give me back 75 cents in change.
Do not confuse the people at MacD's.

We had to have the garage door repaired.
The repairman told us that one of our problems was that we did not have a 'large' enough motor on the opener.
I thought for a minute, and said that we had the largest one made at that time, a 1/2 horsepower.
He shook his head and said, 'You need a 1/4 horsepower.'
I responded that 1/2 was larger than 1/4 and he said, 'NOOO, it's not. Four is larger than two.'
We haven't used that repairman since...

I live in a semi rural area.
We recently had a new neighbor call the local city council office to request the removal of the DEER CROSSING sign on our road.
The reason: 'Too many deer are being hit by cars out here! I don't think this is a good place for them to be crossing anymore.'

IDIOT SIGHTING IN FOOD SERVICE.
My daughter went to a Mexican fast food and ordered a taco.
She asked the person behind the counter for 'minimal lettuce.'
He said he was sorry, but they only had iceberg lettuce.

I was at the airport, checking in at the gate when an airport employee asked,
'Has anyone put anything in your baggage without your knowledge?'
To which I replied, 'If it was without my knowledge, how would I know?'
He smiled knowingly and nodded, 'That's why we ask.'

The pedestrian light on the corner beeps when it's safe to cross the street.
I was crossing with an 'intellectually challenged' co-worker of mine.
She asked if I knew what the beeper was for.
I explained that it signals blind people when the light is red.
Appalled, she responded, 'what on earth are blind people doing driving?!'
She is a government employee.....

When my wife and I arrived at a car dealership to pick up our car after a
service, we were told the keys had been locked in it.
We went to the service department and found a mechanic working feverishly to unlock the driver’s side door.
As I watched from the passenger side, I instinctively tried the door handle and discovered that it was unlocked.
‘Hey,' I announced to the technician, 'its open!'
His reply, 'I know. I already did that side.'
STAY ALERT!

Enjoy,
Mark

This is what happens when the federal government & the teachers union are in charge of education! We need to give vouchers to parents and let them choose their own schools. If public education/schools disappeared, would that be a bad thing?!?!?!

Really good stories Mark. I have one that actually happened to me. Went into a fast food restorant and ordered a berger, they had a special going on with fries, so she asked me if I wanted the special, I said no, that I was allergic to potatoes, she said oh sorry no worries, the special dosn't come with potatos, just french fries. I said no just a hamburger, when she rang it up I noticed that the price was higher than the special. I protested asking why the hamburger without fries was more costly than the it is with fries. She explained because thats a special. I realized what I was dealing with, soI asked if I could still get the special, she said yes. When the food arrived, I simply took the package of fries out of the bag and gave it back to her, she just stared at me as I left. True story

Funny!! Prices of specials, at times is bewildering. A local market runs a meal special. It usually comes with some sort of rolls or desert muffins. I don’t want the muffins or rolls. No special price without. So, I take the rolls/muffins and give them to the person behind. They are delighted and I get the special pricing

My wife carries a small change purse for just the reason described in the MacD's drive through. It isn't only MacD's that the cashiers are easily confused.

Very funny! The humor with the change is so true, many younger people don’t know how to make change. Seems like our education system needs to include some “life skills”.😀

And some of those teachers asked me to "translate" notes I sent them in cursive. They didn't know cursive. I had "Fun Lessons" I would throw in for relief from time to time - one of them was "cursive" and at the 10th & 11th grade level I had students who had never been exposed to cursive. My wife has worked in middle school for the last 28 years. The decline in education over that time is shocking. It really has become a sort of state sponsored daycare. There are basically no rules anymore. Students can retake tests as many times as they want to get the grade they want. No student fails a grade and stays back to repeat it and if the parents are called in due to a child’s behavior, it’s never the child’s fault. Some of the stories she comes home with about someone’s behavior and smart mouth comments, I just tell her not to worry in 6 years or so they will be in jail.

Decent education is the exception, not the rule. The majority of supposed education is nothing more than leftist indoctrination, no matter what some may argue. It's a shame for the minority of good people, like your wife, who are forced to live with and deal with educational leftism.

It can work in the opposite fashion when dealing with customers. A customer asked me how much an item cost so I told him. He said that was too much because another store across town had quoted him a price at nearly half that. I asked him why he hadn't bought what he wanted there. Apparently they hadn't any stock left so he had come to our store. He claimed that the other store was always cheaper than us.
"Not in this case" I said, " they a were trying to overcharge you".
"How do you make that out!" he demanded.
"Well I would have offered you one for free whilst we hadn't any in stock".
He decided to purchase the item because he needed it that day but I could see that he was still trying to work out what I'd meant.

That a terrible environment for your wife to be in but I don’t think it’s that way across the board. The school systems where I live and the schools my grandkids attend…three different states…are well disciplined, progressive and challenging. My wife is a retired teacher and tutors in the same district. I talk to my grandkids and their parents about what they’re studying and the goings-on in the schools and they’re fine.
