I think you are asking about geotagging your photos with your Nikon App on your smartphone. I have a Panasonic camera, which probably works the same as a Nikon. Once your Nikon app on your phone established communication with your camera through Bluetooth or Wifi, you will use only the camera shutter release to take a photo. What I don't like about this function, is that you have to make sure that the camera and the phone are communicating. Another thing is that the batteries in both your camera and the phone will be used constantly.
I also have the "Geotag Photos Pro 2" app installed on my phone, which is much easier to use. You just have to make sure that your camera and phone have the same time and date. You also would need the "Geotag" application for your computer.

I use Unleashed with my D850, and I love it. It is, by a long shot, the best remote device I have found. I am not particularly interested in the GPS feature, but I believe it depends on your smartphone GPS, and the Unleashed must be active. The following is from the foolography.com support tab:

"the Unleashed itself is not a GPS device and needs to get the location data from somewhere in order to embed them in your photo’s metadata.

This means you will need to keep the Unleashed connected to a device receiving location data – but you don’t need to keep your phone screen on or even have the app open/running in the foreground. Just open the app at the beginning of your shoot, let the Unleashed connect and start shooting. Just make sure geotagging is enabled and that you don’t hard close (“kill”) the app as then the location data will no longer be embedded. (To clarify: you can switch to the home screen or other apps, just leave the Unleashed app running in the background.)"

Does the bluetooth unit fit on the camera (Nikon Z7) if you have an L bracket on the camera or do you have to remove the short leg of the bracket to use it?

That depends on the L bracket I suppose. The attached picture shows it on the Z7ii with the Kirk L bracket which has a slot allowing it to make space.

I've been using Geotag Photos Pro 2. Works well. Recommend it.
