Creaky sd card door on Canon R5

Hi Hogs,
Since I’m new to Canon (less than a month in - previously nikon), I have a question about the R5. I may need to call Canon. My first R5 went back on the 7th day because the aperture dial ceased to function - wouldn’t scroll images, menus… or do anything. I reset, nothing. So the dealer swapped it for my current one, also new which I’ve been using for a few weeks now.

My question is, does anyone else out there with this camera have any ‘play’ in the sd card slot door? Mine creaks when I hold the camera, like it’s loose or something. It’s closed securely and definitely won’t pop open, because to open it takes a good amount of pressure to slide it, so that’s fine. It appears as though it is super snug, with the top end maybe a fraction higher than the bottom end (if you have the camera resting on its base). Not sure if this is something I should call Canon about or not. If it needs to go back to Canon, that means out of two R5s, I have a 100% failure rate.

So someone please tell me yours has the same creak to this portion of your grip, at the sd card door. I would feel better. I think.

Go Back to the Dealer. He will make Good!

No creaking or movement at all with my R5. As long as yours is closing securely I wouldn't worry about it, although, it will apparently remind you of it every time you use it. If it starts to pop open then you definitely have an issue, but, the camera will shut down as soon as it opens and the cards can't fall out. Does it irritate you enough to want to send it back on the dealer's return policy? Do you want to wait and send it to Canon during the 1 yr warranty period? If everything else is good with the camera I would have it repaired under warranty, knowing I would get the same camera back. Two in a row is quite unusual. With your apparent luck I'm not sure I would take a chance on a third new one!

I heard back from Canon and they said it not unusual to have a very small amount of play and it sounds as though mine is within factory specs. They told me to video it and send the video so they could see. They said as long as the door closes securely and stays closed, the seals built around the slot will prevent water or dust from getting in. That’s good news! I do love the camera and this news boosted my spirits. Maybe I name him Creak.

Something you never want to hear when you have a problem with anything.

Indeed. Means you’ll never get anywhere.

Sounds like it is more of an irritation then a problem. You mention it being super snug with the top seemingly tighter then the bottom. A bit of careful sanding or filing might give you enough added clearance to ease some of the snugness and possibly eliminate the creaking.
Enjoy! It's an outstanding camera!

I agree, it's actually the bottom that is tighter, but no matter. When I'm out and about, I can't hear it at all. When I'm in the house and I pick up the camera, I can hear it. Real world, with noise, can't tell.

I'm happier, as I don't want to send it back, I don't want it to get hurt in post and I want it to stay here with me, where it's safe:)

I did contact Canon. It’s within specs, but I can show them a video of it. They said it’s not unusual for a small amount play on the door so long as it’s not opening or forcing the camera to turn off. The door is very tight, just makes a creaky noise.

OK, My R5 is hard to push the batteries in, but it works.

Even though my car was visibly blowing smoke, meaning that the turbo bearings were leaking, the dealer would check the tailpipe smoke with a meter and declare that it was “still within in spec”.

Since the warranty was close to expiring, I just added a quart of oil to the gas tank and got really magnificent tailpipe smoke. The dealer didn’t even use the emissions meter. Just on visual evidence alone he ordered a new turbo under warranty.

Good thinking! I'll bet that the dealer was wondering why it was still smoking after they changed the turbo! BTW, an emissions meter won't tell you the condition of your turbo seals, but, it will tell you that a dealer doesn't mind scamming you to avoid a warranty repair. A turbo producing noticeable smoke needs replacement. Period. On a diesel failure of the seal on the intake side of the turbo can be catastropic.

Mine makes a tick or click sound if I push the middle or bottom of the door with my finger toward the display screen. It is very quiet and it does not happen when I am holding it even with a 600 F4. If I try to push the door with the meaty part of my thumb muscle while holding the camera (trying to push the door closed towards the display screen at the bottom on purpose, but not a natural hand position), I can sometimes make this sound. I do have fat/strong hands. If they were skinny, I might not be able to force it to make this sound. While I was writing this I played with the camera trying to make it creak. If I use the meaty part of my thumb muscle and grip the camera hard and try to push the door to the front of the camera (the last motion of sliding the door closed), I can make it creak. So yes, if I use enough force trying to force it to make a creaking noise, I can do it. But it does not happen when I am shooting normally even with a heavy lens.

Ya, mine does it all the time while holding a lens. I just try not to put pressure on it. It's closed tightly, that's not a problem, just the little sound is annoying..... so if I don't make it make a noise, it's not annoying, LOL.
