Sony ILCE – 7RM4 start-up problems

I got a new camera, the Sony ILCE – 7RM4 and I am in well over my head.
I am attempting to learn how to download pictures to my computer
Reading the instructions I’m told to do this:
Set the [USB Connection] on the camera settings to either [Auto] or [Mass Storage].
I don’t seem to be able to do this. I get this message:
If the [USB Connection] is set to [MTP], PlayMemories Home cannot import images. (so true!)
I am also told to do this when I am attempting to install “Play Memories”: Delete “Sony Picture Utility” or “Picture Motion Browser”. I have no idea of where to find those, I have looked at APPS (this is Windows 10) and can find no mention thereof. I had an earlier P&S Sony camera, maybe this software was associated with it.

On your camera open the Menu. Select Setup. Select USB Connection. Select Mass Storage.

For my A-7r iii I just plug the SD card into my computer and click/drag them into the desired folder.

i used to own the a7riv. but i never tried to transfer photos from the camera to the computer using a usb. it's probably quicker and easier to use a card reader. they're fairly cheap.

I transfer via card reader. Much quicker than getting a cable out, plugging up in, starting the camera communications.

Much quicker and easier than attempting to download from the camera to the computer. If your computer doesn't have an SD card slot, get a USB connected card reader.

I use a card reader too. But suggest you get Friedman’s guide to the camera, it’s very helpful, Much much better than the Sony manual. https://friedmanarchives.podia.com/the-friedman-archives-guide-to-sony-s-a7r-iv

Just use a card reader, less wear and tear on your usb port, and doesn't tie up your camera when you could be using it for photos.
FYI, I have owned Sony A6500, A7RII, A7RIII, A7III, A9, and now own A7RIV, A1, A7SIII. They are super cameras and I was a Nikon and Canon Pro user for over four decades before making the move.
There are tons of youtube videos to show you how to direct transfer files from your Sony camera to a computer, but I prefer using a card reader, always have.

I called Sony Tech Support re. wireless transfer of images from my 𝛼6400 (firmware v. 2.0) to my iMac. (MacOS v11.6.2). The tech told me that the capability was no longer available with "Play Memories" software. To transfer images, it's best to remove the storage card and insert it in the SD slot of the iMac (or use use an SD to USB adapter) and click-drag the image files to a folder.

I second the recommendation to get Friedman's guide. His books are clear and logical for a new user and, eventually, for more advanced use.

THANK you all for the very speedy and comprehensive help. I have downloaded Friedman's Guide and I am looking forward to reading it. I did download my first picture using the cable, mostly because I am used to doing it that way! I have had some concern about removing the card from the camera and using a card reader, worrying about wearing out parts that would be VERY hard to get to repair/replace in the camera. But I gather from the combined experience that maybe I am worrying without reason!

I would venture that most amateur and all professional photographers remove the card from the camera and use a card reader of some type, all without any adverse effects.
