How about Photo Contests?

I have read more than a couple articles from some of the rising stars in the professional photography world, some of them say they attribute much of their success to entering every Photo Contest they could find. Maybe some of you have read the same thing. This sounds logical to me, but where do you find all of these contests? Does anyone know of a published list of contests? The only ones I hear of are from the Photography Magazines I buy, but who can afford to buy every photography magazine published? Every time I go to one of the local major book stores I leave with an empty wallet and wonder if I should take out a second mortgage on my house, so I can buy more.

Please let me know if you have a place to look for all these contests?
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, and I think some of the other members might like the same information.

Thanks, and kind regards to all,
Mwendell

One caveat about contests...avoid those where you have to pay money to enter unless you have what you consider to be the best shot in the world. It has to be exposed correctly and the composition has to be right. Also, read the fine print, some contest organizations will take the rights to the winning images away from the photographer, which means they can use it for whatever commercial purpose without further compensation to you.

Local newspapers sometimes offer contests with small prizes for the winners, and you keep the rights to the image.

This one was a winner for me many years ago. I got a six pack of film out of it.

My computer uses bing as its search engine and last week I simply typed in free photography contests and came back with a major list of results. There was one website that had probably 40 or so contests listed and then links where you could go to the websites if you were interested in entering. That would be a good place to start. You might also try www.i-shot-it.com, I know they have a free contest every month and you can enter as many pictures as you want. They get lots of photos that range from amateur to professional.

Theres viewbug or photocamel there are many they all make money on you. I have entered many and won some it's a gamble
But here's a secret, but don't tell the other photographers but go to a camera shop or a good book store take a piece of paper and pen with you and
go through the magizines and write the contest down but most people enter photo contest in there computers and a list will come up

Yes as I was looking I was closely checking the fine print of the rules to the contest. If it said anything about taking over rights to photos or being able to then use the picture without my permission I left the site and continued to look. You have to be careful no matter where you enter a contest about picture theives.
