I went back to my friend’s house this morning and settled on this outdoor shot. All natural lighting.
I applied Thomas’ tips, and used a white reflector to lighten the lower half of my friend’s face. Same T2i camera and Canon 85mm lens as last time.
Looks Great! Epic radiant smile... absolutely fantastic skin tones! And virtually no glare on his glasses...
Superb wardrobe styling... immediately brings the viewer's eye to the talent's face...
Loving the simply yet highly effective color palette...
Masterful use of available ambient...
wonderful control of luminosity latent within...
Thank you for sharing your journey on this quest...

Thomas, so glad you could take the time to look! I’m encouraged by your enthusiastic feedback and look forward to doing more.
I got the smile when I said something funny or stupid. I was holding the reflector just in front of him and used a wireless remote to trigger the camera. I also tethered an older laptop that has a good screen for immediate feedback.
The wardrobe was his idea based on your tip for muted colors. It worked best when I asked him to close his jacket.
The greatest challenge was illuminating his face evenly. His forehead caught a lot of light from the mid morning sun, so I shaded him more with a reflector hanging over the edge of the roof just above him. Another reflector in front of him filled in the lower half of his face. I was happy that I could see the light and control it with the reflectors.
It was a great experience and I appreciate your coaching, Thomas.

I missed my editing note for the glasses as they had a purple reflection in each lens. I selected just the purple color and adjusted the color sliders to the complimentary side for low, mid and high tones until it faded away. Good to know it can be done.
"...I selected just the purple color and adjusted the color sliders to the complimentary side for low, mid and high tones until it faded away..." Fabulous technique! I actually do pretty much the same thing with curves... simply pick the complimentary color and adjust to "taste"... this is also possible in Levels... so many paths which result in the same desired effect.
Please keep at it... Headshots are a stellar source of viable client work...

Thanks again for sharing!

Hi Thomas, I feel like I’m catching on! I learned the value of an excellent lens as he had a Canon 85mm prime that I used on my old Canon T2i. It is SHARP!
