Before I-70 US Hwy 6 was the major route between Denver and Salt Lake City. Thompson, Utah was a major stop for fuel, food, and lodging. The Interstate highway changed the importance of the town and it has become a demenstration of the past.
An interesting and well presented set.
Lies, lies, and more lies! Beautiful downtown Thompson --and the several house trailers, out-buildings, and un-live-in-able ranch abodes of every manner (so long as 'every manner' doesn't go beyond 'railroad tie construction') that make up its suburban areas-- is no less important today than it's ever been, and you should be ashamed for having made as demeaning an assertion as you have! Despite the fact that the D&RG trains stopped stopping there 25 years ago! Heh, pshaw, and odds bodkins, Ed....
I can tell, howl-ever, that it's been a while since you've been to thriving, vibrant Thompson, so I suppose I'll have to cut you some slack. The Diner (image #3) has --for upwards of a year now-- been undergoing major renovations, and there's a sign in one of the windows that claims states there'll be a grand re-opening in 2022 (which is, you may note, THIS present year!). Corollary to that, while the motel (image #2) remains available for purchase (got 85K rumbling around under your couch cushions? such a deal!), its sure to get snapped up any time now.
Oh, but about the pix..... Good stuff!
Nice set. I used to like driving the old no longer used routes.
I passed through Thompson on the 9th of January and it hadn't changed much from last summer or a year ago. It is a symble of the past hence the topic title "the past in the present". It has happened in a lot of places as circumstances change. The pictures speak for themselves.
Nice recordings--that has happened to many towns with the advent of interstates.
Literally can't find this on the map!
Wow, only 85k, I might think about becoming your neighbor. How many rooms? I could make that my home.

Go here often when we take a drive to Moab...always enjoy the experience of looking around just as you did. Great sense of place with your images; thanks for sharing!!
Swamp coolers on the roof brought back memories. Great. Thanks.
