I probably would not have taken that shot. I would reason that there is no real "focal" point for the eye to rest on. The scene would be, in my estimation, too busy for an effective shot. You have proven nicely that my reasoning would be flawed. In download there is not actually one spot that the eye rests on; but the whole is comprised of shadows and light highlighting the intricate pattern beautifully. I like the photo.
