Maybe a little out there, but in the past I have used Pledge furniture spray to fill in the swirl scratches on my glasses. It is temporary but it worked.

To all those who took the time to offer assistance about my scratched lens, I, thank you for your kindness!! I learned a lot. And the biggest lesson I learned is to get clear protective filters!!!! Thank you again!!

Love reading "you" every morning with my coffee.

I shall keep the lens and try the black paint...as I mentioned, the scratch only showed up in certain photos and thankfully not in all my Sedona photos.

In looking for a replacement on line, found a "excellent" used Nikon 18-200 that I put an order in for...can return if not happy.

I will try the black paint and then put it with the other lenses that I rarely use as I also have some Nikon cameras that I no longer use as well. They all work and are in great condition. I am saving them for my grandchildren...true that their cell phones will probably be all they will want....but, I still want them to experience the feel of having a "real" camera in their hands!!
After all....They have seen their grandmother with a camera constantly in front of her face from the time they were born.

Needless to say, there is never a good time for this to happen.

And of course, I was in Sedona, AZ when it happened. (Lens cap fell off in my carry-on, etc etc.)

I read all I could about scratches, I did what I read, to no avail as the scratch is deep.

Some of my photos show no sign of the deep scratch and many others show a definite sign of the scratch!!

Soooooo, finally here is my question…

What does one do with a badly scratched lens?? (I am already planning to order a ‘new’ used one.)

Does one just give it away to anyone who wants it and they can post process away the scratches?
I just can not “throw it out”…..

Thank you for whatever wisdom you can give me.

I'm sorry for your loss: Consider the Hoya multicoated HD3 UV which uses hardened glass and repels dirt and fingerprints: https://www.adorama.com/hy77uvhd3.html?utm_source=rflaid21866

I have a Canon zoom lens that 'acquired' a significant scratch on the front element. The only time it showed was when light hit the front element. I painted over the scratch with a permanent black felt pen, voila, no obvious impact on pictures under any lighting conditions.

You can sell it 'as is' on ebay, clearly listed as damaged and explaining and showing the scratch in pictures. You might make this a bid-for item. Someone who needs the parts may bid up the sale price above just the cost of shipping.

For your new lens, consider if an always-on clear protective filter should be added, protection again this type of lens destroying damage. The B+W XS-Pro Clear MRC filters are so clear, you won't see the glass when first opening the packaging.

Second ebay.
Sold a totally broken lens in 1 hour after posting.

Good choice on keeping and on the 18-200, good luck in your quest! Use a single hair from a paint brush and a very steady hand, should greatly minimize any paint slop.

You may want to get an estimate from Nikon on replacing the front element. I had the front element on a 14-24 replaced, several years ago - that lens used to sell for $2000. If I recall, Nikon rebuilt it for under $400, including replacing the front element. It had been locked in a trunk of a car, the car was rear-ended, with the car's battery in the trunk, the accident caused an electrical fire and the fire dept came put out the fire, and tossed the camera gear, including this lens, to the grass median, spraying it with water or chemical. This was in 2012, and I still have and use that lens.

If you are of the experimental nature you can polish the scratch out of it. You will of course remove the lens coatings at that point but you can polish the scratch out. If you can feel it will your fingernail then it will take to much to do but if you can't feel it or just barely feel it you can polish it out with optical grade cerium oxide. I only suggest this as a fun experiment. I Polish and cut gemstones. I have pushed a lot of things in my life. It is interesting if you are curious.
