The bearded barbet has a worldwide tropical distribution, although New World and Old World barbets are placed in different families. The barbets get their name from the bristles which fringe their heavy bills.
Bearded Barbet An aviary, a large cage to house and display birds, was found in the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan (modern Mexico City) as noted by Hernán Cortés when he and his men arrived in 1521.
Masked lapwings are named after their bright yellow face, which resembles a masquerade mask and contrasts with their white neck and body.
Masked Lapwing Spotted dikkops hunt for insects by repeatedly running forward, stopping, and jabbing at prey with their bill.
Spotted Dikkop The waldrapp ibis is a migratory bird found in barren, semi-desert or rocky habitats, often close to running water.
Waldrapp Ibis A manual focus lens is a bit of a challenge for photography of moving subjects. The narrow depth of field at f/2.8 also makes nailing the focus both critical and an additional challenge. I usually shoot this lens stepped down to f/4 or f/5.6, but the overcast and gloomy December day made the indoor light even more difficult under the aviary skylights, prompting me to experiment at the wide-open f/2.8.
The red crested cardinal mainly feeds on seeds, fruit, insects and small arthropods, generally feeding on the ground in pairs or small groups.

Beautiful series, Paul! I always enjoy your descriptions, too! We enjoy going to Milwaukee, but haven't been to the zoo in a very long time. It's time for a return trip!! :)
