Nice shots Paul. Interesting handlebar mustache on the tern.

Outstanding, Paul! Now we gotta get you and your immense photography talents outta the zoo and into the wilds, lol. Jackson Park soon?
Thank you globetrekker! If you mean our Chicago Jackson Park, it will have to warm up from today's 12F ...
Thank you globetrekker, Jim, Jack, nervous2, Gary, Cotondog, Dan, Elliott, Ray, Dennis! Although the 'main room' at the Mahler Aviary is open with no cages, the rest of the building are small grouping of birds with small wires as cages. Many of these images are shot through those wires.
Learned something today Paul, great shots and descriptions.
Great photos -- close up is nice.
Nice colors and birds 💕👍😊

The Milwaukee County Zoo originally opened as the West Park Zoo in 1892. In 1900, the zoo expanded and become the Washington Park Zoo. Although still located in Washington Park, the zoo changed its name to the Milwaukee County Zoological Gardens in 1953.
Inca terns are native to the same region of South America as the ancient Inca Empire —- hence their common name.
Inca tern The Victoria crowned pigeon is distributed in the lowland and swamp forests of northern New Guinea and surrounding islands.
Victoria Crowned Pigeon Chevrotains are small even-toed ungulates found in forests in South and Southeast Asia. They are solitary or live in pairs, and feed almost exclusively on plant material. Chevrotains are the smallest hoofed mammals in the world.
Chevrotain Herbert Mahler retired as president of the local and family-owned Henri's Food Products. Both Herb and Nada Mahler passed away in 2004 after 52 years of marriage. When the Mahlers sold the business, the sale brought $41.5 million. In 1996, the Mahlers donated $1 million to the Milwaukee County Zoo for the Mahler Family Aviary.
The spotted whistling duck resides in Indonesia, New Guinea and the Philippines.

Awesome. Thank you, Paul, for posting these wonderful images.
Fine shots! The Baikal looks like a female. My brother-in-law had the largest waterfowl farm in the USA (Tennessee) several years ago and raised a lot of those. The colors on the males look like beautiful stained glass work. Love the pigeon!

Thank you Jo! I believe you're right for the female duck. When I think back to December, it seems I only found females, where of course, there were probably both.
Thank you jimvanells, Earnest, Karin, Hereford, Susan, Annie-Get-Your-Gun, Jo! I've been to the Mahler Aviary twice now, this second time the birds in the large main room were a bit less accommodating, as in fewer keepers from the amount of shooting. Glad you liked the results.
