Probably everyone, from time to time, changes a setting or removes a memory card and forgets to put things back the way we expect them to be. Somehow these things seem to happen more and more as I age. Then again, as I age I seem to take these failures more in stride.

And it gets easier to forget about them.

Shot an entire wedding with the camera and flash (old days) not in sync with each other. Had to re-shoot the entire wedding at my expense.

I'm curious as to how you re-shoot the entire wedding at that point.

OK, I’ll bite. Not watching to see if the takeup spool is actually rotating when I wind off the leader on a film camera.

Ouch! That always was painful! Even worse than leaving the memory card at home in the computer.

This one I can relate to. I was on my honeymoon in Tahiti back in 1990. It was our last day so we decided rent a scooter and tour the island on our own. I had my Canon AE1-P (my first SLR so it was always on Auto). I loaded it up with a 36 exposure roll of Fuji Film. We stopped at all the quaint villages and outposts having people take our picture. At one point I even set the camera on a log and crawled over an ant hill so we could get a "selfie". We spent the better part of 8 hours on this jaunt and got back to the village in time for a real luau - the kind where the heated coals are buried in the ground and the seafood and beef is cooked under palm leaves. I started taking pictures of the event mindful of the fact that I should be running out of film very soon. I kept clicking and clicking and clicking but still no indication of the end of the film. something told me I should open the back of the camera. When I did I saw that the film never engaged with the sprockets. An entire day of shooting and nothing to show for it.

I can think of a couple.

Coming to the boat tour for photographers on Maligne Lake in Jasper National Park on the wrong day (next day) and having to take a regular tour (2 hours with just 1 stop instead of 5 hours tour specifically tailored to photographers).

Running out of battery juice in my full frame DSLR after taking first 4-5 shots in the beginning of one day photography class and discovering that I must have lost 2 extra batteries in the dark the previous night at a different location (3 hours away, on the top of a mountain) while shooting night sky. Luckily I had a back up Olympus camera in my car about a mile away. When I returned with the backup camera I couldn't find my group anywhere. I still spent a few hours on location shooting though...

I have 6 presets for custom set up. As Burkphoto says each is very different. Trouble is, I can never remember which is which, and have been caught short searching for the one I want more than once. You would think that making a list on a card or something to remind me would be simple. It is but I still haven't done it!
PS: Would appreciate if Burkphoto would share his set ups. I'm a M4/3 shooter as well.

My most significant mistake was during my first wedding with a 35mm film camera. I forgot to put film in it!. Luckily, I noticed it before the wedding and re-shot the bridesmaids. Everything went fine after that.

One time: left the house with my backpack full of lenses, spare batteries, spare memory cards, tripod, filter wallet, and camera rain jacket, but no camera!

Didn't check to see if the take up reel was advancing the film on our honeymoon. Didn't notice till the counter showed in the 40's. She forgave me and now we just celebrated 50 years together.

Let's have some fun. Be honest and let us all laugh at you. And you can laugh at us.

I will start.

My favorite dumb mistake is setting a shutter timer then NOT immediately resetting it back to normal mode. Invariably next shot or next time I use the camera, I'm wondering what the heck is wrong with my camera and furiously stabbing at the shutter button then click. DOH!!! And having missed the decisive moment, I then set about resetting the shutter to normal mode.

Go ahead. Laugh.

And share your favorite mistakes so we can also laugh.

The dumbest mistake was forgetting I had been taking HDR photos with Under-Normal-Over exposure images. I kept wondering why the exposures were way off. Took me several minutes to figure it out.

I have made so many! One recently: changed the format on my D750 to DX and I don't know how it got done. I didn't realize it until later
Here is a big one, that was done by a co-worker back in 1983 while we're working in Holland. One weekend we went to Kinderdijk to see the windmills. After a while Larry turned to me and said: this roll of film is really big, it was supposed to be 36 exposures and I have taken 54 already. There was no film!

Now I remember a really good one or dumb one. I was taking an adult ed photo class and brought my DSLR for an in class in studio shooting assignment but I forgot the SD card having left it plugged into my computer. It was too far to drive back home, get it, and return too class. So luckily I was able to borrow a card from a friend / classmate. Added issue was he had a Nikon and I a Pentax, and he had images on the SD card so he had to copy his images to another card before I could reformat the card. I think we used one of the school's computers to do the transfer. I of course missed some of the instruction that evening but at least the time was not a total waste. After that I started carrying extra SD cards in my camera bag.

I beleive another class session I had a near dead battery. That one was a wasted class other than hearing about the lesson.

Shooting an important event with no film in the camera.

I have done that one, just recently.
I was in Sydney, Australia walking about the city taking pictures. Couldn't figure out why I was up to 38 exposures. No film in the camera!
