So these are the things of nightmares in Africa! In Zimbabwe many people every year are killed by crocodiles. The guides told us several stories...

These were pretty far away and have been worked hard, not the highest quality. But I love the 2 flies on the first, the dragon fly on the second and the eyes on the 3rd!

The last photo is of a local in their boat that they use to fish. They said the crocodiles have started to learn that they can bump the canoe and get a tasty treat!
No way you get me in one of these.

So one of the sad stories was of a 17 year old girl just 3 years or so ago that was in a canoe, she pointed to something on shore and a crocodile came out of the water grabbed her arm and in just seconds she was gone and not seen again. So we are out on our boat, it was larger than a canoe but still not large. I was up front to get low and be out of the way. On the way to another site I stuck my leg out straight as I was sitting on the floor of the boat, my foot was just over the edge and the guide yelled, Beth, foot! Yikes, I had not thought of it and I could have been the (not 17 far from it) girl next story they told!
So these are the things of nightmares in Africa! ... (show quote)

Wow, great photos. Did you ask why in the world anyone would go out on a small canoe. Don't make sense to me too be in anything that could be ripped over by then. That would be a no BIG boat!!

I've often wondered why anyone would feel confident in any small boat in crocodile and hippo infested waters. Kind of like surfing in Great White Shark food dishes.

They certainly deserve respect.

Actually hippos kill far more people in Africa each year. And hyena are right up there.

But the tiny mosquito is far more deadly than all the big creatures combined.

Beautiful images. Are they worse than hippos?

I don’t know about worse. They have been killing many locals who due to the pandemic are being forced to go into the rivers to fish to feed their families. The crocodiles kill to eat, while the hippos do not. I know at least in Zimbabwe more are killed by crocodile.

Beautiful photographs. You had quite the trip as your photographs show.

My biggest fear was none of the animals but snakes. Thankfully I never did see one.

I saw 3. This guy was in the tree in front of our tent. We saw one out on a drive, got a photo, but it is on my other computer, and I saw one other shy one that took off before I could get a photo!

Fantastic photos and a great narrative to go with them. I really feel you should have gotten closer to the one with the dragonfly on it to really capture the dragonflies eyes too.

I would have liked to, but I’m not going in that water!!!

Great series, Beth, I would be scared too. But the hippos in the background of your last picture are more dangerous to humans than the crocs are.

In Zimbabwe due to Covid many locals have been forced to fish to put food on the table. Many do not have boats and risk going into the river and lakes with nets to fish. The number of locals killed by crocodiles had gone up dramatically. It is sad that they have to take the risk. Hippos are very dangerous as well, but for now it is crocodile in Zimbabwe!

Our boat was larger, maybe 10 feet wide and 20 long with a motor! However up front was flat which is where I was. We were bluff charged by a hippo in the water and we were amazed how fast it was, like a missile! Had it decided to really get after us I’m not totally sure it would not have tipped us! Maybe not over, but a good hard bump. Guessing boat driver would have put it in fast!
