my Delkin Reader for CF Express cards gets very hot when uploading to computer. In turn the card also gets very hot. Is this normal or do I have a defective reader? I am concerned that my card will be damaged by the heat.

I trust you that it's very hot. I would try another reader as I heard some readers do make it hot. It may or may not damage the card but can't be good for the card. As for measuring the temperature if you have one of those IR thermometer they used to check for fever it would be good.

It would not surprise me if the card got quite warm when transferring a large amount of data. It does surprise me that the reader is getting hot. I'm guessing that your card is a Type 2 card. Can you verify that the reader is for CF Express Type 2 cards?

An IR fever thermometer (if it reads that high) or even a meat thermometer. I have a small IR thermometer, maybe the size of an automobile remote key. Can’t be expensive as it was a giveaway at a trade show. It may not be the reader that’s making the card hot, it may be the card heating the reader. If it’s too hot to comfortably hold your finger/hand on it for a minute, it’s too hot - that’s typically about 50-55 deg C.

I didn't think of it. I said IR fever thermometer because people are likely to have those in the pandemic. I have other IR thermometer that can measure in excess of 400 degrees.

If, during this operation, you can't touch it because it's too hot, then there may be a problem. Electronics use generate heat. My card reader gets warm when I use it, but not HOT.
HOT seems a relative term, HOT to me may not be HOT to someone else.
SO, have any of your images not loaded, has it ever failed to do what you wanted.
You could try to load images using a cable from your camera, if you do this, is your card as HOT as with the delkin Reader, if not, maybe it's the Reader.
I would call Delkin directly and tell them your concerns, I am sure they will be able to help you out.
Go to Delkin.com and go to the contact part and ask them, they are the experts.

Thanks, I have used the cable with no problems. As for the reader, my photos have all loaded OK. I am contacting Delkin to see what they say.

I have two of them. They only run hot with the CF Card in them for me. I do not leave the cards in once I have finished the transfer or view of perhaps 200-300 shots though I am talking typical not some magic limit. It gets very warm but certainly not too hot to touch for me. My Canon R5 also gets warm when on for longer periods and part of that is in the vicinity of the card slot.

My reader and card get hot. I just remove the card ASAP after the download is complete.

My ProGrade reader and both my 256GB AV Pro card and 64GB SanDisk get hot. I just remove the cards AND reader ASAP after the download is complete.

I have not experienced this with any of my card readers.
However it appears others are reporting the same thing.

Q: Is it the reader that get's hot or is it the computer that is hot and conducting heat to the reader?

If it's the reader, I'm not sure what to make of it other than "try a different reader".

I doubt it's the computer because the only think that conducts heat between the computer and the card reader is the cable and it can't conduct a lot of heat thru that little cable.

Did he say he was using cable? Sorry I missed that. Ok I see it now. :(( Some of the readers plug directly into the slot. Which makes me wonder, does plugging into the slot provide a conductive path that is missing when using the cable?

But mine don't get hot either way. I have never had one get hot. I define "hot" as unable to touch for more than a few seconds. Which is ~ 60 C.
